I'm leaning toward linden with rot in the heart. The tree did not produce berries at all. So the red mullberry is out. Bit too hard for bass wood. Almost as hard as old yellow pine. I'm considering slabbing it based on the color and figure. It might be trash... Never cut slabs from one of these but I did find a red heart wood tree like this. Softer wood with flame like color in red. Maybe it will look like flame box wood. That one appears to be a service berry something. I'll get leaves from it next week.

I picked up a kayak for a friend
And she loads it in a civicIMG_20200616_130624_01.jpgThen as she's leaving drive's the wrong way
Through a 4 lane intersection
No idea how she doesn't wreck all the time.

Sup ladies?
Went to Gainesville and replaced the brakes on a hoist, then to Athens and teplaced the wire ropes on a hoist. Stupid Detroit. Has a right and left hand rope. PITA to get even.
Think I'll swing by my junk saw honey hole on the way home, if hes open.

Tilia americana

Seems like the best fit of them all. Very ropey under the bark. The color of the cambium is white but the wood is not.
The last three sections on wiki were very interesting. I need to find another one growing somewhere. It was two lots over next door for six years on an empty house lot.

The wood I cut before must have been balsa or Euro or a white linden variety. The chip looked and cut like white pine. I assumed it was a young linden or basswood... years ago. Never cut one this big before. The heart of the base has rot for sure.
They must really like these bigger trees for carving blanks.
6x8 I'd guess is a good goal to have with it wet and sap wood only in the bottom. Bigger ones will make it possible to carve statues. Might be a slab or two farther up in the figured wood. The cut off cookie shrunk a ton in two days. Six inch check now and it's cut an inch thick and light as a feather. Oak would weigh triple dry weight compared to this stuff.
