There is a couple different options
One is a a kit but you have to tear down the engine.
Another is some kind of plug in chip.

One detailed and waxed his and traded it in barely running
The dealer didn't even start it up
And my friend said nothing
He got a great trade in price for a truck with collapsed lifers or a wiped camn
It was running on very few cylinders.

He should look for a tuner that can turn off the active fuel management. If possible can eliminate the torque management too.
Most I know picked ip a few MPG without the afm.

Im not sure if the handheld type tuners can do everything wanted.
@Canadian farm boy what did you use on your truck?
Deleting/tuning wont keep an ecm from failing.
Ive seen very few of those fail. Maybe 1 or 2.
It would likely keep a lifter from collapsing, but if a roller galls, it wont eliminate that from happening.
As far as mileage goes, how is it driven? Whats poor?
My 06 gets 10. No matter what.
Unless I'm pulling a trailer, then it's single digits.

I’ve got a diablo tuner. Mine came with a couple tunes preloaded (they suck) but it’s also iCloud/WiFi capable so I was able to have a couple custom tunes done. I’m running 91 octane fuel and I’ve got the DOD and the torque management shut off. CAI, exhaust and a catch can installed on mine and I’m running oversize AT tires. I’m getting 22-23mpg hwy and 15-16 mpg city on average.
