Stone..brick ..fake stone ......etc , is the norm in the ~UK. You live in a wood house in the UK and its looked upon as unusual to say the least.
Wood is standard here for residential ,the new building products i do not know if i would call them wood though ,my lap siding is cement board stuff and most of the plywood is chips of wood held together with glue ,even the stone on my foundation and columns on front porch is fake stone ,not my preferred choice of materials ,but it is whats available these days . When i lived in new england as a kid ,there were some stone homes there ,do not see many out in the north west though .We do not even have basements or cellars here like we did back east .

Someone say new home construction?
f67e97c397592db8e584070aa44a48a1.jpg

Simon, I think most of it is tied to the ages of our country. Much of your country has been fully built up and existing houses could be 100's of years old.

Canada and the United States are both considerably younger countries and still in the process of building up our cities and towns.

The above houses all built this year will open as model Homes next week. Starting price about $450 000 including lot.

Everything around here short of a mobile home sits on a foundation 4' down to get below a frost line.

The strangest thing to get used to with homes in Texas is no one there has a basement.

A basement is so nice to keep chit.

A house built with stone around here would cost a absolute fortune.

How true...some of the places go back to at least the 1500s. We built many more green oak framed houses once before oak became used up with ship building. There isnt that much big oak here now.

Its a stupidly expensive way to build here to...if you go the natural cotswold stone rout ! Hence the fake stone made with dust .

Couldn't agree more. I just don't understand construction without basements.
We are in a clay bed flood plain so most houses require poured cement piles 20ft below grade with 8 or 9ft poured concrete basement walls.
Some areas in Canada are cement block foundation but we are almost exclusively form poured or ICF poured.

I should point out that i am a fan of timber houses and by NO means think stone is a better choice. Folks say to me "why dont you tare your place down and put up a stone house " Noooo thankyou, I like having a frame house just fine thankyou very much.

How is your day playing out so far
Well, I was sent out if my area to work today and came across and old saw shop. Stopped in and asked the fella if he had any old dead saws.

He took me out back and opend up his shed. It was stacked some places, floor to ceiling with saws. I could write a list of the saws he had in there. I only have 20 bucs in my pocket today. He said he was going to be cleaning out this shed come fall so I gave him my number to go help him. I will have a wad of cash when I go.:)
