I have never in my life seen someone carry a flintlock pistol. That would be very interesting. We can open carry in NC but I have concealed carry and I carry a compact 9mm. I live between 2 small towns. I go to the grocery store in one and the drug store in the other. I normally leave my pistol in the truck at those places.
I used to CC a Ruger P97, but it got to being (sometimes literally) a pain in the butt. I do a lot of business in nearby Slidell, Louisiana where my MS license wasn't valid (that may have changed), and at any rate, a sidearm is a big chunk of metal that you have to think about entering or exiting a vehicle, making a doody at Walmart or Wendy's, etc. And over a few years, I noticed I never really encountered a problem where the solution was two to the center of mass and one to the head. Generally, I've been able to chill out most situations with my boyish good looks and charming personality.

At home is a different deal. Any threat to my wife, my property, or my critters will be met with extreme unkindness of a rapid, ballistic nature.

I've always wanted a single shot, flintlock pistol to carry around in my belt, especially since open carry is legal where I live. I mean no harm to any man, but I'd like to encourage a certain politeness that we may have lost.
My grandson open carries everywhere he goes. 9mm on the hip. He's a very level headed young man too. His philosophy? Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Years ago, when I was more involved with the survivalist community, I tried to boil it down to an equation:

How much does it cost to have this?

How likely are you to need this?

How screwed are you if you need this and don't have it?

I couldn't really reduce it to an equation, but it did clarify things.

Everybody has to figure their own odds for their own life. If i have to go to new orleans, im armed to the teeth. I have jacks and come a longs in all my vehicles. I rarely leave the house without a knife. And so on.

Thats my philosophy too. My wife and I were going to Walmart one day and I grabbed my pistol. She said , do you really think you need a gun in Walmart? I said, honey you don't get to choose where or when you might need one.

In other news, I finally got the flywheel off of the 353, after watching 57 videos about how easy it is to just pop it off. After trying penetrating oil, heat, and gentle taps that turned into a cross between John Henry and Thor, I thought about buying the official husqvarna puller 504 90 90-02 (I've got that number memorized) but its pretty much a unicorn that costs 175€ if you can find it at all.

$40 auto zone puller ftw!
I use a mallet and a length of starter cord
To suspend the saw while tapping it
Removed probably hundreds by now
Never broke a fin.

That's exactly what I say to the bad guys when my pleasant disposition and some polite conversation won't deter them.
That works for me in "the city" where we live. The pepper spray, stick and shotgun are for our country neighbors that claim to be "better" than the city people. Got a weakass deputy sheriff up there. It's pretty much lawless.

I also carry a hatchet in the truck.
Under the seat of my truck is a WWII bayonet that I took in trade for a sawed off shotgun that I took in trade for a bag of dope about the time that "La Grange" was in the Top 40.

I think i made out pretty good. It seems like I probably wouldn't still have the bag of dope after all these years.

I have a bayonet that I bought at a gun show. No dope involved.

That's a 12 yds group
He's the one that ran over somebody's lawn jockey when he was driving he said it was practically in the road.
It was a good 50ft from the main road next to a driveway.
He's wrecked so many times the insurance said one more claim and we'll drop you
He wrecked his wife's car twice.
I keep telling him to get a seeing a eye dog so we can play fetch at work
The church this guy goes to wants him to be part of a armed security group for the church
I said just get some bear spray it would be much safer with your *s-word eyes.
Now he wants me to put a red dot and mount on a ruger 1911 .45
I told him to get a trained seeing eye dog.
