A cricket batter stands pretty much in the middle of an oval field. Maybe 50 mtrs/yds available to score from in every direction. A touch more straight ahead, a bit less behind.
Different players have different favoured shots. Olivia is strong "square" (at right angles to the bowled/pitched delivery) on both sides, whereas Cody prefers to hit the ball very hard back the direction it came from ("straight ") more like you baseball watchers would be accustomed to. But a cricket shot/hit is more often played with a vertical bat as opposed to the horizontal baseball one.
The shot Olivia is practicing in the pic is called a "pull". You pull the ball from ahead of you to your leg side somewhat at right angles.
