My Harbor Freight auto darkening helmet was great for mig and stick welding. I might need a better one for tig.

Jackson, 3M Specialties, Miller, Lincoln, all support magnifier lenses, and lense colors Green, Grey's, and Browns. I think you know how I feel about Snap Offs LOL.
All good advice from Greg, and the car chief above as mentioned.
You gotta be able to see and be comfortable when that helmet is down.
Just like some of you porters and your saws. It's all about the tools.

Getting a high quality large window lens auto makes a huge difference.
I spent good money on the Lincoln auto darkening helmet and then i could see what was going on. When you can see the puddle and the area around it better results will follow.
Throw the cheap/ inferior helmets/lens away your eyes will thank you for it even if you still can't weld any better.

tig is brighter than mig or stick

I would recommend getting one with a big window…pricey, but worth it.

Match your filler wire thickness to the material thickness, and the tungsten can be smaller than the filler wire not bigger..and if your tig rig has pulse. try it at 30pulses.

We always looked at a bad weld and started looking up and the guy would ask what I was looking for, I said pigeons. Guy said what I said looks like pigeon chit [emoji15]

I call em "chicken welds".
Looks like a chicken dragged arse across it.
Was on a job in Opelika AL years ago.
They had to have their "onsite welder" weld our support structure in.
I went up and took some pics of that garbage and showed them to him, then made a couple of passes on some scrap on the truck tailgate.
He let us fix it.
Not saying I'm the best, but that dudes was crap. Dangerously so.
Would have walked off that job if he accepted that chit. It was on an overhead crane that people would have had to stand under.

I would recommend a Huntsman or some other light weight helmet with the large window. If you can fit it in, put a clear protector over your shaded one on both sides to keep it cherry so all you have to do is replace the clear cheap one. A good pair of tig gloves is a must and if doing any amount you may want to wear a bandana around your neck like the cowboys do to keep from burning it. A good long sleeve shirt to keep your arms from "sun" burn as well. A number 12 lenz is recommended for tig welding if you can drop one or two shades it helps to see but is hard on your eyes.

I made a rigged up neck protector out of a piece of leather welding sleeves. Duct taped it across the bottom edge of my helmet. It really helps.
Most of the time I'm welding vertical or overhead, so ive got leathers on. Snap that neck snap and flip the collar up tight.
Agree on the larger window.
Not a fan of "cheater lenses".
I just wear reading glasses.
Like the gold filter plates. Seems like I can see the puddle better than with green ones.

Actually she loves it, otherwise it takes her forever to dry. That material pulls the moisture out quickly.
