My personal opinion is the CP4 pump failure is an internet cowboy driven phenomenon.
Do they fail? Sure.
Do they fail at the rate the keyboard warriors claim? I dont believe they do.
I've seen one.
The dealers in the surrounding counties wont touch a diesel, so they get sent to me, so I work on a few.
I personally own a 13.

Now, 2015 and 2016 we saw a run of head gaskets. Bolts were not very tight on removal. Some gaskets were cracked, some, nothing visual could be found.
In light of the class action lawsuit moving forward against GM due to the CP4 pumps, I'd disagree.

I hadn't heard about the head gaskets.....what do ypu have your times down to on replacing them?

There are class action lawsuits on everything these days. Maybe I'm wrong and they fail everywhere other than central Wisconsin. I can only speak on what I see each day. I've been at this shop since September of 1997.

The LML payed 30 hours last one I did to do head gaskets. That was removing the engine.
They have since revamped the warranty time to 20 hours and thats doing it in the truck.
I can do them in roughly 19-20 hours, so not much extra $$ made on my part there.

Now these oil burning 2.4's in Terrains and the equinox pay 13 hours to do pistons in them. Those I can make some money on.

Daughter has a 14 Equinox that’s burning oil. You’re saying she needs to off it?

Wait until it's cold
Then tow it to a dealer to trade it in.
That's what I do if there's unexplained
Grinding in the trans or engine
Or smokes.
They usually don't smoke bad they are hot.

Or put pistons in it.
I just got done doing a 13 under a special policy extended warranty.
You could talk to the dealer, see if GM will help her out.
If she likes the vehicle, it is worth putting pistons in and running the chit out of it for the remainder of it's lifespan.
If the dealer or GM won't do any type of split bill or cover it, you could tackle it yourself. I can hook you up with parts at cost.

She bought it second hand, so that might eliminate any dealer help. I’ll mention it to her.
Is it the rings that lose tension and fail?

If theres anything I can do, give me a shout.

I think its a combo of low tension piston rings and long oil change intervals.
The oil rings on every one of them are stuck tight to the ring lands and packed with carbon and oil sludge.

This has worked in the past on a 5.3, a Northstar v8, and a Honda generator, so don’t laugh. I’ll have her try an oil change with Rotella T 15-40 and see if it gets better. Our Tahoe got to where it would burn a quart every 1000 miles. Ran Rotella for 3000 miles and then switched back. No more burning oil
