My brother used a cool trick long before construction calculators came along.Rafter length measurements flying around here. Lot's of people not getting it right off the bat. More practice is needed
Measure the length of the diagonal needed on the framing square. From 6 to 12, or whatever pitch you need. Then multiply that times the whole feet in the run, pull that measurement from the long point of the top cut. Then add the assorted inches, fractions, and tail with the square. At the time we were doing a bunch of 9/12 roofs, so he knew that diagonal by heart.
