Just another red oak we found today. They are blown down everywhere.

Those should make for some good milling and interior projects.

Not saying Oaks dont have deep roots, what I'm saying is, Pines seem to have deeper roots here (if it was rocky soil how would that be possible?).
I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Pines have a taproot that goes straight down into the GA clay. They will eat whatever they can to stay alive. Sweetgums and Elms have a taproot AND a LARGE root system that branches out just under the topsoil. Red Oaks are finicky mfers, and most have a very shallow root system that feeds off the topsoil and doesnt like the clay. Thus the shallow root ball when the wind knocks them over. White Oaks seem to have a deeper root system, as do Post Oaks.
Red Oaks are also more prone to be hollow, as the root system cant keep the inner truck alive when we get dry summers like weve had here for as long as I can remember.
Cut A LOT of those up for firewood last few years.
