Good morning Terra firma lovers..
We were at sea for about 10yrs yesterday. we got back @ Just about 18:30 last night, and we left Newtown IOW around 07:45\08:00
There was some fun & interesting sailing during this time.
Coming back into the marina is challenging in rough seas, usually the waves are hitting the boat broadside we got side slipped a few times & you can see the sea hitting the walls and going over it.
One particular place is just of selsey bill. There’s two maker bouys about 0.2 nautical miles apart (see pic with red and green bouys) These bouys are there to show the safest route to take because of the reef there.
To give you an idea of the reef, on the way out at high-ish tide we had 5mts of depth and the other side it was around 15mts. If you get it wrong there may not be enough clearance with the rough sea swell in the place the tide currents can be and are really strong at times at, so you need them in your favour (close to or at slack tide). Ie if the currents are 4knots which they can be, and your max speed is 5 or 6 with the engine on. Your be going nowhere..

and more than likely get into trouble.
The wind was forecast was for it to get stronger as the day progressed, and the guessers got it right, it was . So It was a rough confused sea with a big swell on the deeper side coming back over the reef and a choppy sea on the other. So to be safe we had the engine running to help power us through.
Although The vid doesn’t show the true state of the sea. Although I cut the vid shorter, You can see it change in the vid bigger swells at the beginning to smaller near the end.
This was the vid I got of the sailing race , as we were approaching the line of boats going across our route, we were trying to figure out how to get through the fast moving line boats,
We heard a cannon then shortly afterwards a horn then about a min later another cannon went off, we were not more than 600yrds away as we could see th plume of smoke.
That when all the sailing boats then turned from being in a big long line that we had to cross we’re in a long line in a race and coming in our direction.
We had started the motor already, just incase we had to turn out of wind.and needed power (when we weren’t sure how to get throu that long line of boats)
Anyhow we picked a direction with a gap and those other boats had to give way to us. Which was probably painfully disappointing to them and there position in the race.
