Almost exactly my new apprentice
Things sure were different back in 1991/92, when I broke into this trade.
Guy that trained me, let me use a POS hitachi screwgun of his for the 1st week (it was probably passed around to 5-6 different cubs or more)
After the 1st week he told me, if I was going to stick with him I needed to buy my own screwgun.
All I asked was what's better then this hitachi? I was told to buy a Black & decker 2037. The next day in the first 10 minutes of using my new 2037, I knew it was miles ahead of that POS hitachi in quality....
Month later he told me, I needed my own wallboard bench. So I went and bought my own.
I tried something similar with a early 20 something year old kid, I was trying to train a few summers ago. It did not go over very well. He ended up not working for me anymore.
4 months of using my extra set of tools, he bought $3,500 worth of tires & wheels for his BMW on marketplace, $900-ish iPhone, ate out everyday, etc, etc, but never bought any tools of his own. After some other BS that was going on with him also, I told him, I would tell you pack your chit and leave, but you don't have any tools to pack, they are all mine, so just leave.....
I hope I'm never asked to train anyone ever again, I don't have the patience for it. I'll just crank up sheets with my lift until I keel over and die.
