The hickory around here has that real shaggy look. That looks like oak to me.

Big differences in timber from north to south. Ash for instance......we don't have any.

We have three different hickory trees here. Shag bark, pig nut, and regular hickory.

The branches look all wild like a hickory. Bark kind of resembles mockernut. Got a few of those around here.

Bark looks the same to me.

Smell where it broke. Red oak has a very distinct odor. Some call it vomit. I've never gotten that.

It can wait until I cut it up.

There's Ash around me. I have found a big difference east to west, like how east coast red oaks have cottonwood looking bark, nothing like what I see around here.

Part of the kiddo’s Christmas came…Schutt Authentic Air XP full-size helmets with full TPU bladder/helmet pads. Daughter is a die-hard Vol, son is a Dawg.

Both check out fine…solid, real-deal, on-field player helmets. I’ll adjust the chin straps a bit, add their numbers to the rear, and back in the boxes they go for wrapping…
