What Pat said. Keep your fuel clean and dry (no water).
Factory grade filters changed on time. No rocket surgery for me. My wagon is not hugely turned up tho.
Filters with drains were common place when I was a diesel mechanic. Not sure how it is now. I was taught to drain them filters after each use and fill the tanks for your next trip out. Billy was a bassturd about maintenance on equipment and it didn't matter if he owned it or was repairing it. We did use the big blow torch on many snowy mornings to get thing moving like a cold D6 that sat for a week awaiting repairs.

Most modern aftermarket fuel systems are going to microglass element which has no drain because the filter itself absorbs water, as it does this it swells. When you start to lose power and fuel pressure you know it’s time to change the filter. I started using these about 10 years ago and I’ve yet to see any rust in the injection pump return line banjo fitting after an inspection. I’ve seen rust in factory fuel filters and modified with drains and traditional cellulose type filters. If you pull that return banjo fitting and you see rust that injection pump got a dose of water.
