M-I-L uses cornflour. I just wait longer on a lower heat for regular flour to thicken. Got all the ingredients for when you come over and it's your fullas turn to cook....Self rising flour Will do the thickening.
We used half and half water and milk, as just milk has a tendency to be a little "chunky". Milk wants to curdle. Probably same thing. Just poor folks making a little more out of the little they had.
All of it probably double up Old Special Buns @GCJenks204 in pain unfortunately.
