My brother lived in Shanghai and Hong Kong for at least a decade.....then the Chinese got Hong Kong back, and he left.

Haven’t heard of it downunder but I see how it can happen.Is it caused by the oil turning almost to grease until the engine warms up

I doubt oil viscosity has anything to do with it either.
Many vane oil pumps in engines here running much thicker oil than 0w20 with no issue.

If anyone wonders how the variable cam timing works,

The solenoid varies oil through here


Into the 1st cam journal, here


And from there into the camshaft itself which seals to the cap with 2 Vinton seals.


From there it's out the front of the cam into the actuator.



The actuators have an internal mechanical lock to prevent them from rattling on start up.
