There is a lot about Chicago to dislike but the downtown district has a lot to offer and is incredibly safe (IMO). One more than occasion I have been down there walking and always felt safe. Sure there are some homeless that want to talk to you and sometimes decide to walk with you but never more than a couple of blocks as there are cops every few blocks and they will cruise by and talk to the homeless if he appears to be bothering anyone.

I was there two years ago and fine. Had a nice conversation with a homeless dude at 2am, walked with me for 2 blocks, and then he turned, seeing the cops in the car on the the other side of the intersection.

Many places in my own city that I would avoid during the day, downtown Chicago is quite gentrified.

I hear you. I would prefer to be outside the city but the need for a good school and public transit has ruled that out for now.

A couple times a year we drive past some property that we would like to retire too. One of these years...
