From what I understand the 371 quickly became the 372 as the 371 was a little under built.

I don’t expect the young padawon to have the finesse to runaway 371 without breaking it.

That said I would like to hear what @Stump Shot would say on the matter. He’s been in both I am certain.

The way I understand it the only difference between 371 & 372 was the 371 pto case half was a little weak at the bar studs. Strengthening on the 372.
Correct me if I’m wrong guys

Would the 371 be better for a 24-28 inch? I’m gonna likey run either of these with a 28 light bar on it. Would the 371 balance better than the 461?
If you want to run a 28” bar and be able to bury it, I would go with the 461....it’s gonna have more ass...or at least that has been my experience.

More like it’s too weak for its weight. If it were a 462 I’d tell him to get that one. The price he’d be getting the 461 at I would not be happy
You wouldn’t be happy with a mint 461 for 550? Seems like a great deal to me, same goes for the 371 for $350

Never heard it was weaker in the case
Pistons also are different single 371 vs double in the 372

I had a 372xp and kept it longer than any one of my saws. It was a great runner.

The truth is, either the 371 or 461 are going to be your best friend compared to that echo of your when you get into bigger wood.
A saw with almost double the horsepower would be a big help for wood bigger than 20”. Both of them seem like great saws
