I had been considered the Savage 110, Ruger American, and Winchester XPR. Was going to be in the $5-$600 range with those with a Vortex scope. Honestly I'll only use it for deer, and I'm only out shopping for groceries not antlers.

I have a 110 in .30-06. Old one, pre accutrigger. Ugly and stupid accurate.
Ruger American compact in stainless, .243. My daughter shoots it. Hornady handloads. Very accurate, nicely put together budget rifle.
Had a Mossberg in .270. No complaints. Nice shooting rifle. Sold it to my brother in law as I didnt need 4 rifles in .270.
You'd be fine with any of those manufacturers you've been looking at.

Savage has a decent rebate on some of their rifles this month. I still haven't bought a straight wall rifle for deer down here. I can get an AXIS for $300 after rebate. It feels light and cheap but they're supposed to be accurate. What do you goons say?

I agree.
Savage makes no frills shooters. Very good triggers and actions. Solid barrels. There are much better, but they are much more expensive.
The 110 Southpaw(Savage makes left hand models that are more available than others, or used to) that we got my dad years ago in 30-06 is a fine rifle. Not the prettiest, but a solid working-mans rifle.

T’was a pretty good day. Killed some targets with 3 different guns and then my buddies had to twist my arm to stop at the local watering hole for a swill or 3 and a burger. Tomorrow its 30 miles of bike trails with the same hoodlums.

@cuinrearview one thing to note on Savage.
And it may be different on the newer models, but on their older ones their actions tend to be "long" for caliber. I'm only bringing this up as it does limit options on optics to models with a longer tube.
Or, you put a rail on it and can mount whatever.

Half mile up the road from me a 475lb black bear went down a few years ago. I usually get a few trail cam pics a year of some bears. I have not seen any in person on my property in 4 years though.
