Savage has a decent rebate on some of their rifles this month. I still haven't bought a straight wall rifle for deer down here. I can get an AXIS for $300 after rebate. It feels light and cheap but they're supposed to be accurate. What do you goons say?

I have a friend working on his FFL but until he has that I'll probably shop local. I was more curious about the latest bolt action savages. I see a lot of decent reviews but it's tough to decide how much is hype. I guess for three bones if it's a turd I can handle the loss...

Nothing wrong with Savage...they’ve delved into the cheaper market with some models, just like everyone else, and nothing wrong with the AXIS models. It’ll get the job done, and they’re decent, good rifles for the coin. If mounting a scope, I’d suggest a Vortex 50mm objective model and definitely Talley unitized rings and bases. It’ll be a fine combination btwn scope and mount. All you gotta do is choose the caliber.

If ya wanna up the ante a bit, a couple hundred bucks, look into the Weatherby Vanguard S2 series...heavy-hitting sub MOA 100-yd bolt-actions, right out the box. The S2’s are damn good bolt-actions.

I had been considered the Savage 110, Ruger American, and Winchester XPR. Was going to be in the $5-$600 range with those with a Vortex scope. Honestly I'll only use it for deer, and I'm only out shopping for groceries not antlers.
