1000005143.jpg1000005145.jpg1000005144.jpgI got this 80s Yamaha royale venture motorcycle for free this morning from Facebook. Drove 50 minutes each way. Rand and drove 2 years ago. No key, no title. Been sitting outside but tarped. Gonna detail it today, order a key, and look into the battery situation. Tires hold air. Nice gentleman gave it to me, his son parked it on his property 2 yrs ago. He had garden solar lights taped to the front...

Logan,

There is no doubt that was a good find and of course the price was right. I hate to seem like a negative Nancy but I really caution you to do some calling or better yet visit your local DOT/DMV office and ask about the process of applying for a lost title. I will tell you from experience it can be an extremely long, frustration, and expensive process. Make sure you keep a record of the contact information of the gentleman you got it from 9name, phone, address, etc.). I understand he was probably not the titled owner but any information is better than none. You do have the advantage of having a plate which can be cross-referenced to see if it matches the VIN. Do not be surprised if it does not...............I will tell you from personal experience they sometimes do not.

Thanks for the advice Bill. I know this could definitely be a pain. Never delt with something like this before. I'll make some calls this week. Since there's no title I'll probably avoid doing any major costly repairs. Hopefully it'll just need fresh gas and the battery charged since it ran and drove good 2 yrs ago. Then I'll have to see what I can sell it for without a title, or trade it. Or if it for some reason has major issues I can just part her out.

Ive bought quite a few dirtbikes, quads, trailers and what knot without titles, I made a deal with the local sheriffs deputy that if he can run the VIN's for me and if it comes back stolen, he can come get it and I will tell him who I got it from.

I make sure to tell everyone involved that I will be having sheriffs run the #'s and if its hot, I aint gonna be the one getting in trouble.

so far everything has been legit, but I still keep my guard up.

The other thing I have no title for is my 16 foot tandem axle trailer, I bought it from a company tho that I know the owner of via a family member, and he's been looking for the title for a month. The tag serial number or whatever rusted and stained so bad it's unreadable.

I cannot speak to Wisconsin law but here in Illinois an old flatbed without a title is a simple albeit expensive fix............

I will explain later

Please anonymously run the VIN before you spend a penny. Although not likely it is possibly "hot"

I’m curious how you accomplish this in Illinois? Here in Virginia ( or maybe it’s only the county I worked in) even the cops have to cite a reason for calling in a plate check to prevent “abuses” of the system. I’m sure the laws vary by locality, though. No argument with you, just curious.

I do not know how Virginia licenses and titles vehicles, motorcycles, and trailers but here it is the Secretary of State or better know as DMV. You can phone them or stop in their office with a plate number or VIN number and they will tell you what they know. The amount of information they can provide is dependent on what they have records of and how much digging they want to do.

Virginia DMV. But they won't pass information out like Illinois does.
That stinks. I wonder if anyone has challenged their refusal.

Hypothetical situation.....

Jill goes to look at a truck that is advertised in the paper. She meets with the seller and writes down the VIN and plate number. She asks about a title and the seller is hesitant to give her a clear answer. Jill is skeptical and wants some time to think about it. She goes home and phones the DMV. She provides them the seller's name, the VIN, and the current plate number. All she asks them to do is confirm if the seller is the titled owner, the truck has not had a prior salvage title, it has not been reported stolen, and it is plated to the seller. The DMV refuses to tell her. She is still skeptical but goes back a day later and purchases it. The seller produces a signed title after the cash has changed hands. Jill gets home and notices the names do not match. She goes to title it and the DMV tells her that title and VIN has been flagged for fraud. It turns out the seller did not have the owners permission to sell the truck..

That can happen and where does that leave Jill?
