Thanks for the advice Bill. I know this could definitely be a pain. Never delt with something like this before. I'll make some calls this week. Since there's no title I'll probably avoid doing any major costly repairs. Hopefully it'll just need fresh gas and the battery charged since it ran and drove good 2 yrs ago. Then I'll have to see what I can sell it for without a title, or trade it. Or if it for some reason has major issues I can just part her out.Logan,
There is no doubt that was a good find and of course the price was right. I hate to seem like a negative Nancy but I really caution you to do some calling or better yet visit your local DOT/DMV office and ask about the process of applying for a lost title. I will tell you from experience it can be an extremely long, frustration, and expensive process. Make sure you keep a record of the contact information of the gentleman you got it from 9name, phone, address, etc.). I understand he was probably not the titled owner but any information is better than none. You do have the advantage of having a plate which can be cross-referenced to see if it matches the VIN. Do not be surprised if it does not...............I will tell you from personal experience they sometimes do not.
I cannot speak to Wisconsin law but here in Illinois an old flatbed without a title is a simple albeit expensive fix............The other thing I have no title for is my 16 foot tandem axle trailer, I bought it from a company tho that I know the owner of via a family member, and he's been looking for the title for a month. The tag serial number or whatever rusted and stained so bad it's unreadable.
Please anonymously run the VIN before you spend a penny. Although not likely it is possibly "hot"
I do not know how Virginia licenses and titles vehicles, motorcycles, and trailers but here it is the Secretary of State or better know as DMV. You can phone them or stop in their office with a plate number or VIN number and they will tell you what they know. The amount of information they can provide is dependent on what they have records of and how much digging they want to do.I’m curious how you accomplish this in Illinois? Here in Virginia ( or maybe it’s only the county I worked in) even the cops have to cite a reason for calling in a plate check to prevent “abuses” of the system. I’m sure the laws vary by locality, though. No argument with you, just curious.
