OK guys I just got done restoring a 028 Super and I was thinking its performance should be close to the 346XP. I guess I am expecting too much from a 40 year old saw because it doesnt hold a candle to my ported 346XP? Does this sound right? I am trying my best to get this 028 Super tuned but I have never run one before...

OK thanks for letting me know. Yeah the 028 Super even has the 46mm domed piston versus the 42mm in my 346XP. I like the 028 Super, and I'll give it some slack its only 2 years younger than I am as it was made in 1979 I was made in 1977. Thanks again Dub.

I don't even expect 028 would outcut the husky 455 rancher.
Well that's all you have back then.

It's all coming down to how air is moving through the saw and the newer stuff is alot better at it.

I've still heard they aren't all that strong, with the 346 being known for strong. The 028 does have a steeply down angled exhaust which should help exhaust exit more easily like what the newer saws do.

I've got an 028 WB that sees very little action .It would be and probably is a good firewooder but not a good choice to hot rod .
As far as the 3 cubers the choice usually is a souped 346 but I've seen some hot 026 Stihls . Kevin ( Cut for Fun ) had a pair of I think Partner 5000 one of which I think he won at Webster with .I ran one at Chardon Ohio that was a runner but it had a bad operator .

Asking a 028 to beat a 346 is like asking a Ford F-150 to beat a mustang. Is it possible? Possibly. But not without a lot of work. Lol

Perfect analogy. The 028S is a torque saw for its size, built to last. 346 more of a limbing speed demon.

Which would cut more wood without breaking down? That’s an argument for another day, but I’d bet good money on the 028.

Just had a good buddy who needed a saw. Gave him the choice between a ported 028S and a Ported 261. He ran both, and I needed 1/2 the price for the 028S. He took the 261.
