I have a blown up 044 super magnum, I ordered a rebuild kit of a 044 but when I compared the old and the new I learned that the super has a 10mm piston pin and the new piston pin is a 12mm. I am looking for advice and any suggestions on where to go from here. I am very new to this field and trying to learn as much as I can.

Is the cylinder salvageable? If so, you could pick up one of these: STIHL CHAINSAW 044 MS440 PISTON AND RINGS 50MM NEW # 1128 030 2000 --- 10MM PIN | eBay

Just curious, did the plating flake off or wear through?

I don’t understand what you mean, I used a bad batch of mix and totally blown the head. I can post a pic if you are still curious.

If there is aluminum transfer on the cylinder, the cylinder most likely can be saved. If the plating is missing, then it's junk. A 10mm 044 cylinder is going to run better than any AM jug you put on it.

It dose feel smooth on the inside of the head I would just be worried to use it on a new piston and ruin the piston.

I’d clean it up. If that’s the original cylinder, they are quite rare. Supposedly there were a few OEM ported models that got into the PNW called super magnum

I was going to ask what the difference was, as I’ve never seen a Super Magnum 044 before.

A lot of good info has been added here. ;)

maybe I’m a bit slow. But the op has a rebuild kit for 12mm and his is 10mm
I need a read again and confirm :icon_tfno:

after all :hambre: & :beer-toast1: can make the mind all  & :loveyou:

The main thing here is A 12mm won’t fit a 10mm :crybaby2: we’re talkin wrist pins… (along time ago in a far galaxy, stihl changed the details/design on the crankshaft) the way erverbodies
Knows ( all the chainsaw goofs) is the wrist pin was a 10mm and went to a 12mm. And you can’t mix them.
send the whole kit back if you can… and please tell what you brought &the link :angel2:.

You have a lot of good advice here. So ask then silly questions because you don’t know what there talking about….

btw there is a good chance you can fix it up… it just depends on if you have the time and …dot dot … patience..

my advice would be if your local to a member on here ask for advice & help ;)

If not…read a lot & ask a lot of questions :D

edit …and post pics of your cylinder/piston & saw …:campeon:

That is interesting. I did a search for 044 Super Magnum with no results other than this thread. If what you are thinking is true, this is a unicorn saw.

Just get a new 10mm piston & put it in the new cyl. you have, the cylinder doesn't care what size the wrist pin is.
