Good Morning Double J. I have read this thread thru a coupl'a times. What I would like to ask, is did you use your 2nd winch to drive the mill, or did you choose a different one? How did the remote control work out? The reason for asking is, a friend has a Peterson swing blade mill he would like to use a similar set up as Stump Shot's. The remote set-up would be great, did it work out for you. What winch motor did you end up using? Thanks for any information.

Hello Sherm'n, I have not modified the remote control winch to move the sawmill back and forth yet, I do plan on doing so early next year. I am relatively sure that this will work to do the job on my mill though. The winch I bought is rated for 2500 lbs, you could go a little higher if your not sure of the weight it will be moving. Just a note though, the slower the speed through sprocket, gear or belt reduction will give you more torque to move an object with ease. I used belt speed reduction boxes on my CNC Plasma/Routing machine for routing, this indeed gave me much more torque for each stepper motor movement X,Y,Z axies. The remote control "will positively" work well. Another way you could go would be with hydraulics, but would require allot more effort, time and money, and why I chose the winch to move my sawmill. Well hope this was helpful, Jeff.

No I haven't yet, my browser is not happy with me presently. Planing a hard drive upgrade early 2017, going to clone to a larger ssd then. I have looked at the comments on your page and saved the link. When does the contest end if it's before then I'll load it on the friends computer. Thanks for put'n up with me, your thread led me farther in choosing the right drive solution.

To win one depends on votes from other instructable members, I was one of the members who did win, but it was the very last prize, a book and a coffee mug, not enough votes to have won any of the first or second prizes. If I had of entered the contest early, I think I could have gotten enough votes to win first prize hands down, but I was not finished with the build and had no time to even think about writing a book on it. So IM "Humble" O, the contest was not one that takes skill and talent into account or is even remotely based on that, it's simply votes from other people who have no clue how much time, knowledge, ability, ingenuity, energy, and engineering skill it took to build the sawmill from scrap and scratch, using almost every facet of metal working as well. I do have to say the Instructable staff knew what I had done, but the way their contest system is structured, there's no way I could have won the first prize, that's life I guess, not upset, just disappointed in the system.

it's really good and safe as far as protection goes and it's free. I use it on all of my home computers and it sure has protected me from tracking bots and other lurking problems on the internet. Good morning Jeff, contests seem to run a bit like politics, so many people seem to busy with life and being entertained. Guess your book did get exposure to some that appreciate what you've done and would like to build a mill.
Firefox is on my computer, just shut down updates after it messed a few things up a few months back. No automatic anything until my drive has the room for the ever enlarging updates. No problems on the Linux computer of the wife's, I'm allowed to fix, not use, kinda like her closet.
Gonna download your book at friend Dave's later before we star milling our last walnut logs this morning . Pretty cool this A M headed for a balmy 34* today.

Agreed about the politics of it all, busy with life and being entertained, the way of the millennial generation. I am now in the process of learning Fusion 360 for design (a totally free version from Autodesk which owns the Instructables site) in CNC routing and why I am putting off the movement for the sawmill until next year. Once this is accomplished I'll be designing and building a centrifugal log splitter without the use of any hydraulics, all mechanical. Then I'll be running my CNC machine for wood and metal products to sell after I retire. I also have thoughts of building a desktop CNC router using Linux EMC to run it. My wife doesn't use the computer I built for her any more, she uses her IPad, so I'll be acquiring her computer for the desktop CNC router, he he. Yea, it's already a little nippy here and getting colder by the afternoon, enjoy the book and stay warm, Jeff.

You're way ahead of me on all of your builds and plans, I have a lot of ideas but the skill and knowledge are a bit lacking. Gonna take a few pics of the swing blade mill today and see what you think of the two mounting ideas of mounting the drive system. It was my choice that I freely gave it up.

Hello Stump Shot, thank you for the encouragement and funny you should mention that as I am doing just that. The new sawmill will have a few modifications and improvements built in to it, a more compact design and will be able to cut larger diameter logs.

I have gotten sidetracked and not gotten back to building the sawmill in a while. I’ve been repairing and building trailered BBQ pits and smokers for people. There has been a huge demand for this in our area. Have two full builds contracted now, don’t think I’ll be done with them until October. So won’t get back to building the mill until the two contracts are completed. I will get back to it, just going to take some time. I’ve also had to build some tooling to accomplish building these pits and beefing up my trailer to haul steel and tanks with. Now in the process of building an A frame 2 ton chain hoist lift on wheels so I can lift and move 500 gallon tanks around and set them in place. Lots of work to do. I’ll be posting another tool I built shortly to bend solid rod and angle iron, it works very well, also a trailered pit I did allot of repairs to.
