The transmission in my 2007 Murry 40" seems to be out. Belt looks good and tight. Tractor will only creep forward a bit, stop, then creep some more. Same in reverse. Anyone know of a source for a replacement transmisson?

hydro static drive? Disc drive ? There usually are keys in the shafts for the rear wheels possible that they are worn out. Most of the time they want almost as much just for the tranny as what the assembled unit cost new. 16 year old mower likely key parts are no longer available. A lot of the rear ends on the lower price bracket Mowers are the same or very close.

Check the transmission input pulley for stripped splines. Sometimes they wear out and the pulley slips or spins on the shaft.
If you can give us the model number we might be able to give you more specific help.
That's a pretty old machine though.

Belt drive, belt looks good and tight. The model # is 405011X48A.

I did some Internet searching and don't seem to come up with an exact match. In general replacement Murray transmissions seem to go for about $700, which is too much for me to invest in this machine and I am not interested in trying a used one. Thank you for your interest.

Yep, those backends are pretty pricy.

I would sell the machine for whatever you can get and buy another before trying to replace the tranny
Around here you can buy complete running 42" craftsman mowers for about $400. Can replace the spindles and blades for under $100 in parts
Everyone seems to think they need a zero turn, so older lawn tractors go cheap.
