So I went rummaging around last night and came up with another option. I have a 350 carcass that I scavenged to rebuild mine. I would need a P&C and a bunch of miscellaneous small parts to get it going I think. It was a dished piston model (45mm). Would the carb (can't remember which model was on it, think was a zama?) properly fuel a standard 350 P&C? Looks like an OEM top end kit can be had for about $100. Or would I be further ahead to convert to 353? A snorty 346 may be a bit much for him yet.

I had been hanging onto it to cannibalize as needed, but it may just need to be rebuilt. Will have to further peruse my parts pile for it. Meanwhile, time for another look through the OPE classifieds!

The 346 P&C can be had for the same price as a 350/353 top end. Might as well just go for the gusto, the stock Zama will be acceptable with the limiters trimmed, if you don't want it too sporty just leave the 350 intake track and stock muffler on. Bonus is it will be easily upgradable when he is ready. That saw with a 16" Total would be a perfect starter saw.

My vote is an 028 Farmboss or Super, tough as the big brother 038, nearly as light as an 026 and just as bombproof if not more so. Also cheap as chit for what they are!

Yep. I build it as a stock 350 (44mm). He has very limited experience, but is mechanically inclined and does well with machinery. He really wouldn't know a strong runner from a weak one I don't think. He can convert to 346 himself later if he wants.

Get him a mac 10-10... it'll make him appreciate modern saws once he can buy his own. Plus their bullet proof

Afraid he'd be reluctant to use....kids these days. Principle is sound, but I'm looking to encourage him. He could afford to buy a reasonable saw, but the "need"/interest isn't there. Of course, when he tells me he had to ride around a downed tree on one of the trails I hint that maybe a saw would be nice to have. He's been spending his money lately on firearms...which I fully support.

I been shopping craigslist on some 026 & 028s. Most of the stuff around here still going for big money (of course it is firewood season). Need is not urgent, so I have some time to shop/build.

I have an echo that you can have for the price of shipping. I believe it's a 500evl. No spark but it's pretty much complete.

Just found this on CL. 25 minute drive from me.

What you all think? (I know *f-wordall about stihls)

https://zanesville.craigslist.org/grd/5821912399.html

I don't think spare parts are as plentiful, but it is a stihl so shouldn't be too hard to find. It isn't a pro model - more of a homeowner model - but other than that it's one of the few stihls I don't have much experience with sorry!

How much is an 028 there? I'd be happy to ship you one out there if we can figure a cheap slightly longer shipping method, and I'm always happy to do something at cost for a forum member - unless someone on your side of the pond had access to something similar and can save you the shipping

That's a mighty kind offer Sir! The model 025 caught my eye as not a prolific number. Though I'm not too familiar with the Stihls, there are certain model numbers that are very popular and recognizable. There's one on Fleabay with 48 watchers though...so I take it there is some interest in them for some reason? Chainsawr has 14 pages of parts listings for it. hmmmm. May have to give that fella a call and ask if he's got any wiggle room. It's be nice to get something going for around $125. I'd have a bit more in reviving my other 350.

028's are going for $200 & up.

As long as you can get spares for it which it seems you can then I'd say it's a good deal. Throw him an offer of $120 and see what he says. the 028's over here are going for about the same, I have one in atm that came as a job lot and cost price is £150, so with postage you'd be better off buying on your side of the pond. Ah well always happy to help!

EVL mean electronic vibe less.

Well, I just learned something! I grew up near the end of points ignitions, so therefore am an idiot as far as their workings. I know there are conversions for saws though.
