one of the lads that works for me seems to have killed one of the new 660's today, only 6 months old.

I'll get some pics when I get home as I've just set off down south for a couple days, but essentially he was coming into the back cut and the clutch exploded at 13krpm, the aftermath isn't pretty! The clutch spider has shattered on two sides, one shoe has bedded Itself into the crankcase and the oil pump looks to be in a real sorry state.

I've never heard of anything like this happening before, to the point where I burst out laughing when he told me! Has anyone ever had this before?

Anyways I'm thinking it could be a write off unless I can repair the case, then get a full new brake assembly, oiler, clutch etc but my one concern is that the end of the crank and the remains of the spider are blue/gold, look like they've been god damn hot! He does abuse the saw so I wasn't surprised in all honesty, it probably gets about 6 hours of HARD run time every day, and despite my best efforts he refuses to use decent oil, he uses the cheapest red crap he can find at 50:1

I'm running the job on site but don't directly employ him, sorry I should have phrased it better. He works under me but is directly employed by the site manager. he's using the site managers saw, who's equally hard headed when it comes to oil

Did the clutch drum break too? I'd inspect the clutch drum (or what's left of it) for wear and check the inside that face the shoes for a step/lip. Drums are wear items & often are neglected as they look perfect from the outside but the inside is what gets worn and is prone too fail at some point. At 13k at failing clutch is messy, dangerous & expensive. The general rule is something like for every 3 sprockets that get used the drum should get replaced. I go way more than 3 sprockets but do keep an eye on drum wear each time its removed for needle bearing grease, rim replacement etc.

Sounds dangerous. If he is abusing the saw bad enough to cause catastrophic failure, he is putting himself and others at significant risk. Explain that to his insurance company, see if he smartens up ???

Normally that's what I'd think but the saw is only 6 months old, yes the drum is trashed as is the brake band and the oiler.

Good shout, and although I'd feel like a dick for doing something like that it's probably the best option for my own safety as well as his

It would probably help others out if we had a thread about what oils are good and which ones are not.

Sounds like he ran it with the brake on and it got so hot it finally came apart,,,, not good,,,like a small grenade!!!
Guy needs a good safety lesson for himself others need to be aware of him!!!
If he worked for me he would be paying to get it fixed or be gone,,,

Well despite several bollockings from me he still starts it on half choke with the brake on every single time he starts it, problem is The site manager who owns the saw doesn't have a clue and doesn't give a toss!

It's like the blind leading the blind

I've seen several examples where they lost the e-clip and the drum walked sideways ,tossed the bearing and broke a clutch shoe .One such example they had ran the air filter until it was nothing but the wire mesh that once held the flocking .That example was nothing but neglect all things considered .

Not to bust anybody's bollocks here but, I've been doing the half choke high idle start for many years with no problems like that. You start the saw, release the brake and tap the throttle, saves on rip cord, specifically when it's another crew's saw that's not in tune. Maybe it's not right but it works on a finicky saw every time. My personal saws get a lot more care than crew saws but also get the same treatment as far as starting procedure, brake always set at start-up, generally a leg lock type start
