Ms260 flywheel side seal

I bought this saw for 100 bucks. He said it wouldn't tune right. Pressure tested, flywheel side seal leaking from the seat.
So I split the case cuz it looked like someone had pryed it out and damaged the race.

Confirmed.
Can I just use a sealant on the outside of the seal or is this case half shot?

I use motoseal on every seal I install. Just makes sense. No failures. I'd imagine whatever sealant you use on cylinders is just fine

I'd run a light smear all the way around the inside of that surface to seal it. It's a bit tricky with the crank in place. Then smear a bead around the outside of the seal and install it.

Also what are the three threaded holes for around the bearing? There was nothing there. A dust shield?

Not sure. Nothing goes there on a stihl. On a husky it's where the seal retainer screws to. Might be for some kind of puller to push the crank out

I believe those holes are for mounting the generator (I think that's what it's called) for the heated handle saws

It's the number one spot for air leaks in this model. Any and all leaks I've had on the 024/6 were right there.

Thanks Mike, I never knew what those threaded holes were. Also didn't know that they offered heated handles on the 026.

They are known to leak. A pain to replace due to being so small.

Interesting! Well this one wasn't leaking from the rubber seal. In fact it was brand new. It was leaking from the seal seat right where the scratch in my pic is.
Al do you use sealant on your seals?

I use a thin coat of sealant on them all. Extra insurance in my opinion. I've built and repaired more of the 1121 series saws than any other Stihl model.
I've seen seal pockets much worse than yours. Use a good sealant, and I believe you will be ok (observe the drying time requirement if there is one on the tube/container)
