I 100% sure I am @ the bottom end of the knowlege base when it comes to saws-- that being said, I had read that a pot load of stihl saws are made in chyna, I had thought that they were only made in germany or the USA.
Any way you can tell if one is a chyneese made unit? Of course other than it stating on it. Maybe a serial # series?

I think the ms171 was/is. Maybe a couple other smaller saws. Still under Stihl quality control in their own plant.

It appears that the China Qingdao produces entry level equipment, like the MS 171 that @huskihl mentioned. Possibly the 170, 180/181 and other of the smaller saws - possibly battery ones too are made there.

Stihl has made saws all over the world. Brazil is a big one.

I would think ( maybe I am wrong though ) that most folks living in the USA ( @ least those of us over 50 yrs old ) would prefer to buy ( all things being equal ) products made in the USA first if possible . Along those same lines of thought, I would think products made in chyna would be one of the last places those same folks would prefer to buy from, certianly buying one from Brazil over chyna.

With the smaller saws like the 170/171 and the 180/181, those are considered throw away saws, at $200-$240, burning a piston and cylinder will cost you easily $200 to replace with labor. I can understand the thought process, if you are going to build a throw away saw then have China do it, but for the rest Brazille, US and Germany.

Saws made in China have their place, there are several people here in the forums that are running China 372s and they have been running great for years. Depending on what you are doing and what you can afford the China route makes sense, for others its the US, Germany, Sweden route.

When you say Sweden are you implying the Huskys? Some one also told me husqvarnas' are no longer made in Sweden--- maybe the same deal as stihl? just the lower end units?

Husky has factories in other countries like Stihl. Some are made in Sweden, some Brazil, Japan, China

When I brought my Husky 36 it was built in the USA but my mate brought
one a few years later and it had PRC on it.
Peoples Republic China. Seems a lot of the smaller Husqvarna's were built there.

For stihl the first digit in a 9-digit number tells the country of manufacture. 1 is for Germany, 2 is USA, 3 is Brazil, 5 is china, 6 is Japan...i forget what 9 is...
