I am just rebuilding a couple and have different frames and new Briggs engines to go on them. The recoil hits the frame unless you lift the engine, then you have an issue with fitting the pulley cover on.

So are the frames different? Or are the engines different from original?

My engine is flat worn out & I been looking at a possible transplant.

Mine is quite old with an aluminum F head Briggs. It is close by the recoil for sure.

Just guessing here. But I expect it's due to the old ball slinger type recoils being smaller diameter than the new pawl types.

Edit: If you do run the new style recoils, be mindful of bumping them or tipping the edgers over. The sheet metal in them bends pretty easily, compared to the old shrouds.
You can end up with the flywheel rubbing the recoil guts then.
