While I recently got into rebuilding Homelite's, I just picked up a running Mall 12a for a nice price.
I plan to do a rebuild and possibly repaint to original next year.
Maybe 30-35 years those old heavy as lead Malls would show up at farm estate sales along with engine driven New Holland hay balers .They had a hard time getting 25 bucks out of the chainsaws and much over 100 from the hay balers .Those BTW were bought up on the cheap just to get the Wisconsin 4 cylinder engines ,they scraped the rest and recouped most of their money .What ever became of the saws I have not a clue except I doubt many ever ran again and those that might have never cut much wood .
My OMG has 3 of those "double"links in the chain set. I cut with it today for the 1st time and you can feel them when they come around in the wood. Guys open up the gullet of chains for better chip clearance, these look to do just the opposite. My chain must be a put together from scraps variety.
If and when I ever get around to restoring the 12A I think I can carve out a sprocket to run some type chain other than 9/16" .As it is the thing uses a sprocket with an oiling hole in it . I've got some 1/2" chipper and a bar in .063 that would fit .There isn't enough left of the original 9/16" chain to even file it so it would cut .I doubt the thing has even ran for the last 40 years .
I'll be picking up 2 complete Malls in 2 weeks. A model 11 and a 2mg. Both have bars and chains.....both will run...and the model 11 has the helper handle still. Pretty excited. 2 weeks cause I have to get paid first. haha
I picked up a Mall model 7 saw engine at the Orange mass. show a few weeks ago. Very complete except for the air cleaner. I'm starting to pull it apart.
