I purchased a nib walbro 191 for 43.95 cents shipped! Switched 144 shafts and installed 191 butterflies and set screws 1.5 out cranked and it idled and accelerated perfect! Low jet backed down to 1.25 turns' high was fine and it was running 13200 rpm's . Killed it and 1 pull idled for 8 to 10 minutes flawlessly.
Does the 191 share the same bore?

See, this is what I'm referring to with my question. 191, 198, and a few others. With some, is the only difference jet limiters to make them EPA compliant? I'm thinking there were about 6 different carbs used on the 357/9 over the years. At least different model numbers. This should open up more options to look for.

Just did the swap, but I used a 198.

87 choke plates are still available, but I clearanced the 199 plate.

Certainly helps to have an extra of each carb around for reference.

The 198 had 2 horizontal stops parallel with the carb bore that needed to be ground out. In addition, the orientation of the throttle plate needs to be maintained so it flows over the idle and transition ports.

Youll see them. Pull both shafts and plates, Piece of electric tape over main nozzle and idle/tran jets.

Two large horizontal tabs in line with carb bore before the venturi on the choke side. Youll see them.

Trick I figured out to make things a little easier is use a small zip tie to hold the spring loaded lever on the choke shaft together while in transition to the new carburetor.

Also after grinding away the choke stops in the new carburetor, a green stone polished it up to help keep the Venturi effect stable.
Took about fifty tries to get the throttle plate in the magic spot where it will work properly. Just one of those things where persistence pays off in the end.
I used a drop of blue loctite for extra insurance on the screws.

Yup on that plate Steve.

I have to keep an assembled 120 if full view while I do the swap. Otherwise it’s easy to forget where it all goes.

FWIW, the 87 butterflies are still available form Walbro.

I use red Loctite on the butterfly screws.

Hey fellows kind of a new member or at least fairly new to dealing and building a chainsaw. I recently started buying up a few parts to build a 262. And I was wondering also about making a carburetor more like in 87 and I came across a HDA-212. Now I have nowhere near the kind of knowledge you guys have but was wondering if this carburetor could be substituted. The choke rod can be removed from the 120 and the same choke plate can be used that was in the 212 all you have to do on the throttle is switch over little stop lever. The carburetor is a bit taller but the impulse hole is in the same spot cars that says nothing for the internals of the carburetor maybe you guys no more cuz this work and would have even be worth it?
