One time when I was 12, I encountered a nest of them while squirrel hunting. I decided to see what a 3" load of number sixes from my .410 would do to it. The nest stayed attached to the limb and didn't get a big hole like I expected, but something like dusty smoke came out the other side. I didn't stick around to see what it was!
