I dropped off the Dart Block, callies ultra crank, callies compstar h-beams and the CP 4.155" flat tops... while I was there I picked up their saw, I was supposed to grab it 2yrs ago... better late than never I guess.
Terry purchased it in the 70s and he said it hasn't ran in 20+yrs... he's getting up there in age and he said it was his favorite saw... needless to say, I want to get it running for him.

I did the normal checks... it felt like it had compression, not much... but I figured it had enough to fire... I checked spark. It has a Bright spark... I dumped fuel down the carb and tried to see if it would pop off... nope. Instantly I said "$h!t"... I pulled the exhaust and found what I didn't want to find...

I'd like to find an oem replacement cylinder and piston... or maybe an upgrade/big bore kit... does anybody know anything about these saws, Jonsered Model 52/52e?

I've gat a couple of them here for parts. I'll check to see if I have a good top end if you like.
It's worth fixing, they're great little saws.

So......is a 52 or 52E? It's an early one either way. To bad about the P&C. Cyl will likely clean up by the usual methods. There is no new two ring pistons available for these saws.....however Northwoods Saw has a single ring AM piston by VEC for the 49sp which can be used. The wristpin bosses must be relieved slightly to allow for a little more room for the thrust washers and wider wristpin bearing that the 52 has....other than that they are a good piston. I have swapped used OEM pistons between 49s and 52s in both directions with good sucess over the years as necessary......when there were no alternatives. 52/52E is a stout little pro built saw. If you get the parts you need new or used, I suggest you replace the crank seals as 40 year old rubber will be at the end of its life even if it's not why it failed in the first place. Cheap insurance.

Absolutely man. These are good people, I'd like to get his saw up and running for him... he's in his mid 70s... every time he talks about it, he smiles. I'll have to film him when he goes and fires it for the 1st time in 20+ years.

I dont know the difference between the 2. I have yet to look into that deep.

it cleaned up for the most part... there is vertical scoring that remains... and what appears to be a ridge... kinda like an old sbc block that has high miles. Lol

That's bad and good news... I'll look it up! Thank you.
The wristpin bosses must be relieved slightly to allow for a little more room for the thrust washers and wider wristpin bearing that the 52 has....other than that they are a good piston.
That's a simple fix, I'll machine a block of aluminum to hold it so I can widen that area.
I have swapped used OEM pistons between 49s and 52s in both directions with good sucess over the years as necessary......when there were no alternatives.
Thats great info man... i was struggling to find info for swaps etc.

Yeah, I noticed on the YT videos they're running 20" bars on some and they seem to pull it ok. It got me thinking. Lmao

Absolutely. The bearings feel good but the seals will be changed.

Ok, I'll take a look today. I have a couple of 52e saws and a whole bunch of 49 sp saws. As Cantdog says, the 49 piston will l work fine, just has one ring instead of two.
I think the main difference between the 52 and the 52e is the ignition system. Also, one of those 3 cubes from the era had a non-adjustable oiler, but that was probably the 51.

I have this cylinder and piston. The cylinder has a small piece of fin missing as shown, but it is not really compromised at all. The piston has a small scratch on the intake side but will run fine. Not new, but a functional top end. If you think this will work for you let me know, I'll be gentle with the price because shipping that far will be a tad bit expensive.17033588642494031293516795187490.jpg

I honed the cylinder... I still have a couple small vertical scratches... I ordered a few pistons... dolmar 111, husqvarna 50 and a 350... I'm hoping one of these will work or can be modified to work.

How about $45 shipped? I'll leave the carb adapter on it because you might not be able to find a gasket and that's kind of a fussy one to make.
Also that gasket is best left undisturbed......generally cooked onto the cyl and really hard to clean up.....plus that gasket almost never fails.

That's a good deal!!!

I have to turn a spud, currently my smallest spud is 46mm. This DOM tubing will work just fine. Current numbers.
