Thanks to Mastermind, I’m installing a CROSS PERFORMANCE cylinder Kit for my Stihl 084.

This will be the first time I’m doing a cylinder and top end on a chain saw. I will be posting the tear down and build here, as well as posting some videos of performance pre and post-transplant.

I’ve looked on Youtube for 084 tear down/ build videos, however I was only able to find one, and it’s in German to boot!!! ( technically there are 4 parts to the same video so I count it as one.)
My German not being what it used to be, I only got every few words. I get the gist of most of what’s happening, however I’m sure I’m missing all the little hints and tips. That’s why I’m posting this.

What advice (besides send it to MasterMind or any other chainsaw whisperer) do y’all have for a first timer here.

Let me know…..

Many updates and pics to come.

MI GO BLUE!!!!
My best advise is to get a box of sandwich bags and a sharpie. Put all groups of screws in the bag and label where it came from. If seen many saws with the wrong bolt/screw in the wrong hole and stripping the hole or going thru a fuel tank. Take your time. Post pics up of what you can. Check everything really good. If you question it, ask or replace. Parts for that saw are hard to find and pricey. Good luck!!!

The knowledge base of the members here on ope can be your biggest asset and most valued tool. Just take your time, ask lots of questions no matter how little they may seem. You'll get that saw going again in no time and when your done you'll know every single nut, bolt and scratch or scrape on it. Have fun and enjoy

Make sure to clean every crevice out as best possible. That fine pitch can get into crazy places without noticing and cause headaches down the road. The ziplock bag is a very good way to keep things organized and from being lost. I also take a lot of pics with my phone and it helps with assembly especially if you have it apart for awhile. Photo references are handy for me anyways. That is all I can think to contribute for now. Good luck my friend and hope it all goes well for you.

well you have mentioned it.. but take photos before and during strip down.. so when reassembling you can see how it was.. ie carby links and wiring.
wash the saw thoroughly! with the covers off and then blow it dry. if you can get the muffler bead blasted and painted that will give it a few extra years before rusting away to tissue paper. GL will be watching.
p.s i got one is bits ATM. if you need pics of it yell out:)

If ya get stuck one of us may be close enough to smell an open beer can offering or a pie...
How far "north" are ya ?

Are you completing a "straight swap" of tops or are you attempting to replace a blown set ?
Asking because we will need to make sure of the original failure cause if there was one.

@angelo c I'm up in Mahwah which is were287 and 87 meet. This is a straight swap, the saw is running pretty well right now my reason for swapping is probably based on my need to always tinker with things that shouldn't be messed with :). I'm always liberal in my offerings of beer, pie, and the occasional Pork shoulder.
