Funny you bring this topic up I was running a well used ms660 this morning and it was brought to me because it would stop running so of course I ran and ran and again ran it nope she just kept on running so I called my buddy up and told him to come over and run it himself so he did and surprise it stopped running I took it from him and the first thing I look at was the kill switch his hands are so big and the switch is well pretty loose that he not knowing that he bumps the switch with his hand lol.

Buddy of mine brought his neighbors dr brush mower to me because it would run for a minute than die but could restart right away almost. He said I made sure it had fresh gas and the gas shut off was turned on. Well I started it and then it died but never pulled off the trailer before I found the second fuel shut off that wasn’t on right under the tank.

A buddy had a similarly embarrassing Doh moment... He sent me home with a Remington named china POS saw that wouldn't run. He bought it as a lighter saw (he's 72), to kind of replace a 359 Husky that he accidentally straight-gassed. Said he ran 4 tanks through it, and then it just wouldn't run. I put known good mix in it and it had issues. Tried adjusting the facsimile of a carb, but no luck. About that time, I noticed a discoloration of the cheap mesh air strainer. If was positively packed with fines. He said that he had to sharpen the chain after the second tank and that it wasn't cutting well out of the box. He DOES know how to sharpen a chain so I didn't put two and two together until I saw this. I cleaned off the filter with carb spray since my air compressor recently died, put it back together and it fire right up and ran pretty decently. I just had to laugh.

Years ago, my neighbor, and good friend, comes into my shop. Beet red, sweating, and out of breath, he says, "can you please help me start that f.....ing snowmobile. I've killed the battery, and pulled till almost passed out." I go over to his garage, make a three second assessment, pull up the kill switch, and fire it up. Keep in mind, he is a UPS pilot of many years. I shut it off, look at him and say, "do you really fly those planes?" I have read never let him forget that day.
I was that guy a few weeks ago!! Why must ya hate. :camper:

I ran out of fuel on my motorcycle once, shifted the petcock to reserve on the fly like a pro, kept on riding.

Forgot to stop by a gas station asap.

:(

In Ireland and the UK, and mebbe some other places on the other side of the UK, you flip light switches down to turn them on. I have always found this odd since a lot of machinery flips up to turn on. Just seems like a dangerous thing to me. Anyways, a friend of mine was trying to start an Echo. It wouldn't go. I asked if it was on, jokingly. She looks at it and goes 'Oh! It says to flip it up for on. Are these American?!'

We have a 288XP on the estate. The on markings are hard to see, and if ya try and start it off, it will flood in short order and be a huge pain to restart then if you don't know what you're doing. When I switch it off, I either immediately reset it to on to be safe, or I use the choke to kill it.

I think its my pioneer 600 and 602 the on off is opposit. Up is off down is on. That got one for about 15 pulls.
But thinking about that my stihl o41 is normal. Up on down off. I an always bumping tje switch on that thing off. If it was down that would never happen to me.

I guess I'm the odd man out that hates momentary bump and spring/self return switches.
When your neighbor hands you a flooded saw and you just do the old school thing of removing the spark plug and then turning the saw upside down with the bar tip on the bench.
Now you just give 5~6 good freewheeling pulls on the recoil and blow the excess fuel out of the cylinder.
Now dry the spark plug and put it back in.
When the damned power switch auto-flips back into the run position, you get that nice flame thrower effect from the plug wire having curled back over by the plug hole and lighting the gas spray!
Or you can tie it back towards the handle and get a nice dose of Electro-Convulsive therapy in your forearm or knuckles.

One more thing...
My Holly bushes have a knack for bumping the kill button on my weed beaters.
The old manual switch can often be flipped back on before the engine quits spinning, whereas the that "three second" death setting means the switch just flips back and the motor dies anyways.

Call me weird But I just expect the switch to be and stay in the OFF position when I flip it and put the tool down.

Lastly.
When you grab a unit that's been sitting and the carburetor is dry, You can just leave the switch off and then set the choke closed.
Now a couple of leisurly pulls primes the carb and lines with NO issues of a spitback ripping the recoil handle through your fingers and/or snapping the rope out of the handle.
Now you can flip the switch to the on/run postion and give the rope a proper pull to get things going.
Kinda nice to have that simple pleasure and finger saver, built in, eh.

Had buddy remove the mower deck to sharpen the blades.
Put it back together and it wouldn't cut for crap. Called me over to diagnose...blades on upside down!!!
He gets reminded every so often;)

Fun story and rather similar. We put up PVC fencing and wife wanted to attach clips to the inside to run electric fence wire, clips attach with just two screws so she said she would handle while I finished digging holes and setting the last few poles. I didn't pay much attention to her but noticed when she went for a third battery after only about 15 clips installed (only driving 3/4" screws into PVC mind you). I watch her put the next clip on and she gets down behind that drill like an offensive guard ready to put a drive block on Brian Urlacher, I couldn't help but nearly roll laughing. I ask if they are going in rather hard, and she is like OMG yes. I flip the drill to forward and she proceeded to nearly make me eat that darn Ryobi drill.

Regarding backwards chain mounting?
Ya but did you try to sharpen it backwards? :D
Someone needs to try that with an Oregon Vanguard chain.
Heck, those floppy looking depth guides might be a new secret weapon, when sharpened on the gullet side!

I'm pretty sure at some point in time most of us have done that, or thought it had fuel and didn't... But by the same token you also have to wonder how many saws have been skidder modified or tossed down a gully for the same reason.
