For what it's worth I have bone stock 2012 372XP X-torq and no problems to date. It gets a lot less use than your saws but I have had it for about 3 years now doing weekend warrior work and it's been great. I don't use decomp, cold start is standard, and so is warm start -- first pull on a warm start. Only time I set high idle is if the saw is not cold, but not warm (sat for 1/2 hour or something and partially cooled off) -- I pull w/ no choke and if it doesn't start in one or two pulls I'll set high idle and it gets going no problem after a couple or 3 pulls after setting high idle (pull choke out and push back in). It's very rare I have to do that -- usually just 1st pull when saw is warm it starts.

I have done zero to the saw -- just run it. I haven't checked plug (to look for rich or lean) or pulled muffler but will probably do at least a muff mod to it and retune (get rid of limiters) and also get an unlimited coil -- tuning is just so much easier IMO w/ unlimited. When it's in the cut it's not hard to hear it 4 cycle if you let up for a moment so I don't think it's lean... but I again I haven't looked at plug or anything to check.

Here's a video of Dan running it in some pretty hard Oak that's been sitting for a while... not bad for a bone stock saw w/ 24" B/C. I keep it sharp and enjoy running it.

The guy in that vid kinda looks like a guy I know whose name is Dan and lives in MA. Does he have the nickname "Tecatedan" on a 3-wheeling forum by any chance???

You're It ?????

Lol!

Nah, just tagging this thread for later. I'm just trying to figure out what combo of saws to buy this winter. A 390xp and new version 261 combo are leading the pack. I like the power/weight of the 2260, but kind of scared off by hot start issues. I'm just now starting to read up on the 372xp...My head hurts

Ive found on my 562xp that when restarting hot its best to start it in the fast idle/run or hotstart position whichever its called. Starts everytime

That is Dan @paragonbuilder who lives in CT. I don't think Dan ever lived in MA so he is proably not Tecatedan
Now that I mentioned him in this post he'll chime in.

Maybe Tecatedan is ParagonBuilder Dan's Doppelganger ?

I see you are in NY if you aren't too crazy far from Norwich, CT you should try and make the GTG at Dan's coming up Nov 5th!
It's been a great bunch of guys and Dan has a great location for a GTG. This time we need to make sure we make a dent in his firewood since winter is coming!

Don't be scared of a new 562. It's a great saw.

So, you're saying if I send you a couple saws this winter for porting; You will be able make sure that I won't have hot start issues? It gets and stays hot in these parts, so this is a real concern for me.

Thanks,

-Pat

I'm sooooo not speaking for anyone else - but you have to seperate out the hot start issues. 99% are people who don't have the smarts to flick the saw to fast idle before trying to start an autotune saw when it's hot. The other 1% is guys working a saw hard above 100f.
If this is you I'd be looking real hard to find the dyno run of a mastermind 261. If you are cutting in those conditions it's probably dusty too and the better filter on the stihl is probably enough to push me that way. A hotted up 50/90cc combo is hard to beat.

I can't cure cancer or anything like that. Some saws are gonna have problems. I'm just saying that Husky pretty much has the 562, and the 550 to where they don't really have that many issues.

Will a 562 or a 550 last as long as a Stihl 261? I doubt it.

Horse Feathers!

I've spent enough time in forums to know better than that. There're way to many cats around here and over at A.S. that are plenty sharp enough to try the "fast idle" cure. I also understand that plenty of you have had zero issues. I've read so much my eyes are crossed....can't remember which thought rattling around my head came from what thread anymore.

For example: The last cure I read was AV gas to keep the fuel from vaporizing because of the heat sink problem in the 550-560 line. Lol, it could have came from this 372 thread for all I know.

Thanks for the advise on the 261 though. We had 13 days above 100F, 3 at 99F, and the rest between 87-98F last month.

Edit 10 days 100+ (July) / 9 days 100+ (June) / only 1 so far this month.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me, thanks for the help!

If you think I'm trying to be a smart Alec, you are reading me wrong.
Just saying that the number of people who HAVE to run a saw flat out, tank after tank, in seriously hot weather are few and far between. If that's you, then you MIGHT find a weakness in an autotune saw - when compared to a similar sized stihl.
Sometimes the Australian doesn't translate well via Internet, so I hope you see I'm not having a crack, she'll be right and bob's your uncle.

I've had 0 problems w/my 562 in the heat or cold, since the carb fix. I like it a lot, and for firewood, a ported Dolmar 421, Stihl MS241CM or Echo CS490 saw and ported 562 would be hard to beat.
That said, if you're doing a good amount of larger trees, a ported 50cc/90cc combo would be dynamite. I still want t0 try the the MS461 and 661 and do some real cutting with a 7900/10, but after running AWOL's worked over 390xp, it made my Stumpbroke 372 feel weak, (it isn't) and isn't much bigger or heavier to me. If my 372 wasn't from Stumpy, I'd sell it for a done up 390, but I'm keeping that one.

Thanks for the help,
