Here is a 55 project I've been working on. Only have after pics though because I didn't think about it until too late. It was a 55 with ruined top end I was given. I got a new closed port piston, cylinder and muffler from HL supply. Also split case to replace bearings and seals. Also replaced worm gear, av buffers, rim sprocket, drum, needle bearing, rebuilt carb, impulse grommet, plug wire etc. The coil is bad so I'll be replacing that with an aftermarket from HL supply. I lost the little nut that holds the air filter in. The clutch cover is melted a little which kind of stinks but it works fine. I hope this ends up being a decent little runner. I still need to get fuel line and filter. Want it for limbing, smaller stuff so I'll probably do 16 or 18" .325. Here's some pics:

I really regret not taking before or during pictures. This thing was some nasty and crusty. Definitely wasn't treated very well. They broke the muffler mounts on original cylinder and messed up the muffler which also had a mouse nest in it. Looked like lean scoring or overheating did the original piston in

Looking good!

I had an open port 55 given to me recently as well...like yours, mine has a scored piston and the cylinder doesn't look salvageable. I am finishing up a 359 project and have a 394 next in line, so the 55 project is going to wait a bit.

Now, I have seen special pullers for the oil pump on the 55. Whats the deal there??? Seems strange to need a puller to remove an oil pump.

Thanks! I have an extra OEM open port cylinder that is in great shape. I'd let it go for really cheap. Let me know if u would be interested. I gotta clean it before taking pics.

The worm gear for the oil pump is pressed on the crankshaft. So u need a puller to remove it to replace the seal. I have the part of the puller that threads on the worm gear but not the part that pushes on the crank to remove it. I had my dealer remove the gear and I put it back on myself. The oil pump comes out without anything special.

Thanks for the clarification on the pump drive gear. I haven't run across a setup like that yet. Makes me wonder if I can improvise with a 2 or 3 jawed puller???

As to the OP cylinder, yeah I would probably be interested if it is in good serviceable shape. Otherwise I had some plans to play around and do an ultra cheap budget build just for the heck of it... I know OEM kits are much more affordable now and all the good reasons to go with OEM. Truth is, I have my main go-to saws and this is just going to be a plaything to experiment with a little bit and have fun with. Worst case scenario is the experiment is a complete failure, I'm only out 40 bucks, and I'll end up doing an OEM kit in the end. ;)

When you get some pics, shoot me a PM. No hurry though as I won't be getting started with the 55 project for awhile.

I got the Hyway open port kit for 79. It also came with gasket set and seals at no extra cost.

I'll send u pics of the puller along with the cylinder. It looks perfectly usable to me lol.

If it wasn't for the damn coil I'd be just about done. I'm ticked lol.

My biggest fear is that this thing is gonna end up being a turd.

I was very impressed with the fit and finish of the Hyway top end. The melted clutch cover is gonna bug me...I wish it wasnt plastic

Thats sweet for sure!! Do these use the coiled Husqvarna fuel line or can I just cut my own? Does anyone know the fuel line size as well? Thanks

IIRC, I used 1/8" ID Tygon line on a 55. Yours is one clean saw and chain catcher looks brand new - all I've ever seen is real buggered up ones.

For the puller you can use 1/2" NPT fittings to grab the oiler gear. I built a puller out of a a 1/2" to 3/4" union. Notching the 3/4" side I was able to grab it with a 2 jaw puller.

I also built a puller using a 1/2" to 1/2" coupling. Insert a 1/2" x 2" nipple on the other side and welded a nut to the top. A bit of all thread or a full threaded bolt and wham... professional looking puller.

How are people running the fuel line so that doesn't interfere with the choke or get pinched? I can't find a good picture

One of my 55s. The new Chinese air filter bracket has a slot for fuel line.

Thanks. I got it better now. It annoys me how the wires run along the flywheel shield. Just seem to be in the way and not stay put. I'll have to get some zip ties or something

On your Shield which is the blower cover ;) There are slots in and out type that hold the wires in place. The zig zag method ~!~!

I think I need a new shield. A couple of tabs are broken and the shield wont stay in place. Also, I think need to shorten the plug wire. Thanks
