Think about changing my 346 over to 3/8's and was wondering how will a 346 with 3/8 18" bar with skip chain do compared to one with a 18" .325 with full chisel? Thanks

Going to 3/8 is like having it ported, you can never go back.

I run a 20" 72lp chain works really well. Not as far to the ground. I tried the .325 chain and I just didn't like it and it took a different file I had to buy. I use the same chain for every thing, lots of saws and operators, I keep my personal saw hidden cause it is always ready to go.

I like .325 on a <50cc worksaw, especially in small hardwoods for its smoothness. But for performance and chain options like skip, square ground etc 3/8 makes sense as you have plenty of 'off the shelf options'. If you want to run square and don't have a suitible grinder changing .325 to square by hand will test your patience.

Thanks guys, i have been researching old threads and a lot of guys say not to switch but i thought with skip maybe it wouldn't be so bad.. I did muffler mod one of my 346's but it does not have the gasket delete done to it.

I still like .325, sometime it feels faster, sometimes 3/8 feels faster. Too damn close to call, but generally like 3/8 mo better.

I have .325 on one 346 and 3/8 on two of em. Not a problem having two files, but don't like having to switch wheels on the grinder.

I ran my 346 with .325 semi today...I am a big fan of .325 on small saws as the clutches and such just aren't as robust as the bigger saws. If you want more speed try an 8 pin rim. .325-8 is almost the same diameter as a 3/8-7. Switching is not only the kerf...also "gearing". This chain cuts pretty good I think....

I did this experiment and put it on youtube. Poke around and you can see it in bigger pine too. No skip tooth though.

Nice videos Wolverine, clearly shows the 3/8 to be a hair faster. I've never run anything but .325 square chisel on my 346. Never felt a need to switch it out. I can see the simplicity of having 1 file size for everything, but the way I built my saw box takes that inconvenience out of the picture for me.

I like 325 on my 50cc saws. It's just smoother when limbing small stuff. If she's got the grunt, try out an 8T rim like Jimmy mentioned.
