So I was out in the shed and in my 288 parts box. Got a flywheel in there with 5018023 v2 printed on the back.

Went into my 394 parts box .... pulled out a flywheel with the same number on the back. At first I thought I had mixed something up because i was pretty sure the 2 saws had different flywheels.

Nope....they ALL have 5018023 on the back of the flywheels and for our purposes i believe this number to be irrelevant for 288 and 394. The proper place to find the actual part numbers is stamped into the side.

501802201 is 288
503634001 is 394

So....they are two different flywheels. Just with the same irrelevant number printend on the back. Ugh.

Welp. At least this mystery is solved

Are they timed differently? I seem to recall a couple guys successfully using 288 flywheels on 394s, and vice versa. I thought the
magnet structure might be different between the two.

Someone told me I can't interchange them. Cranks are same. I dunno what the actual difference is between the two. They look pretty similar to be visually.

If they have the same number cast into the back, does that not mean that they came from the same mold?

Makes sense to me.

I'll bet the keyway is off or magnet are different.

My problem is that my knowledge in these little projects comes to an end.
But now I'm more intrigued so I'll dig deeper.

No video for this tidbit of information Matty?

Color me disappointed.

Just messing with you dude.

Keep on being awesome.

Eh.... yes and no. I was live last night on Kens small engines stream and mentioned it but no specific vid done yet. @KennyWinCT

Maybe if I figure out the actual difference between them I'll do a specific vid on the topic. :) info like this tends to get buried in obscurity of live vids but the topic does deserve it's own spot.

I have not timed these flywheels but on many others I have played with its just the keyway placement that differs. The keyway determines the timing of the spark so by moving the flywheel on its position on the crank timing can be altered. There were times when I used coils or more recently modules on saws that were not stock, flywheel timing sometimes needed to be changed, not always.

it sure seems to me like timing is likely the biggest difference here, I'll check today sometime and see what I can see

because the 394 flywheels are NLA ... it sure would be nice to be able to modify the 288 flywheel to fit... and iirc, they are AM as well, so their availability is quite good

I can rebroach any flywheel. Just need to be able to determine exactly where to cut the slot.

The timing can be so close that there is not room to re broach a key but having the tools to do so is definitely a big asset, I have seen your vid of you doing a re broach ,Randy.

it sure looks like timing is the only issue. if one was to rebroach you would end up with a wide single slot.

I'll do a vid later ;)

Wudinme :couch:
but by next week or two I can give you some more feedback on this. Timing the coil positions on both cases should tell more.

I dont have the saw here or i would post pics. I recently had a 394 of a buddys that the fins came off the flywheel trahed the coil and air conductor. (Luckily minimal damage to the case)I was searching for the same information, most of the part searches i did crossed to the 288 flywheel. With the 394 fy nla,i figured I'd just order an aftermarket 288 fy and take a chance. When i got the new part i compared to the original 394,timing key and magnets matched up,so i put the saw together, and it runs perfect
