I've run across an ad for a Husky 288xp. I don't know the guy or the saw. But it is a runner.
Based on pictures what would be a ball park price you would expect to pay.

That thing has been busted up and worked over at least a couple times, I'd want a look under the hood first before I made a dollar amount decision as I can see busted and missing parts from the photos.
Also, running and having a good piston are two different things...
Right now from what I can see maybe $300.00 or so at best and that might be a stretch.

Always ask.... when was its last rebuild? New bearings, rubber etc.

The high top is worth something, as is the wrap. But without knowing when the new bearings and seals and rubber and carb kits etc was last done... yikes.

no decomp, broken clutch cover, tweaked gas tank, missing operator presence lever, starter cover is buggard...etc. that saw is nice enough that is deserves a full on rebuild, but at minimum look at it in current cosmetic shape, then determine a value fully rebuilt. then determine what it'll take you to get it to that point. then its a math equation. Fully done up, ported, powder coated, new bearings, oem this and that, might be in the 1k range. just gotta figure out what $$ it'll take to get there and then you have a math problem to solve

the rough answer is to offer the guy probably way less than he wants.... its a project for sure.

I noticed the plastics and presence lever were knackered. I was hoping to use that to my advantage to bring the price down a bit.
I haven't talked to him so I don't know what he has to say just know it runs and cuts. I'm trying to find a mid 80 plus cc OEM saw to use for firewood duty. It's absolutely a want and not a need. I do want it reliable starting and useable. I'm not interested in porting, muffler mod is ok though.
The bigger saws don't show up around here all that often. I'm not around people who deal with them so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage compared to some of you that swim in this stuff regular. That's why I asked.

Its a great saw....but that one needs a rebuild and fully gone over for sure. If that's your aim....and you know what you are getting into then go for it. I do 288s all the time live on YouTube so you are welcome to venture over there in case u run into an issue. Best of luck

dang dude, it's gonna take me awhile to make it through your channel. I'm sure I'll learn alot.

I've come across the term "rattler" several times in forums, would you take the time to tell me what that refers to?

He has come off his asking price since the ad was placed 7 weeks ago
I know I'll pay more than some on here think it's worth but they don't come around often, or they are far away for travel or shipping. Which adds to the cost. Or they are super nice and more than I willing to pay.

I'm doing my best to find something other than blue thunder 660

This chit adds up fast like Matt and Steve said. I see lots of cosmetic issues on that saw that raise questions for me. Lot of guys think there chit don’t stink and there stuff is worth it’s weight in gold... don’t fall for it. I personally wouldn’t pay more than 300-350 for that saw and that’s if it runs. A mint rebuilt 288 is a 7-800 saw. Just my opinion.

Broken clutch cover/chain brake, broken starter and missing handle insert/op presence, lawn mower starter and where's the decomp?

He's come down on his own for several weeks. started at $700 and he's down to $520.
I made three offers up to $460 and he said no. How about $500. that would buy it.
I made a purchase today so I'm not in the market anymore but I wouldn't have minded trying out this model saw.
