I just bought a mint Husky 261 want to find out if anyone has tried to cut the dished piston, base, and squish band to make them run like the 262s? If it can be done why buy a 262 piston. !!
My 262s have been cut anyhow...

I already have the 3 shoe clutch and some modded 262 mufflers... Looking for HDA 120 or 87 carbs...
Don't know much about the 144s..

That's a good point for sure... I'm aware that the timing changes. I would degree one of my 262s again and get the numbers. Just thought that I could get a yes or no if it's doable . Just trying to save 35 bucks on a 262 Meteor. I may go that route if my port timing won't match my 262 numbers. I will still need to degree my old 262 even if I use a 262 piston. Hunt's built that 262 over 20 years ago it's still a very strong saw always ran it with a 28in. bar... I don't have a clue what the timing numbers are.

If all I need to do is cut the piston flat and drop the jug not a big deal, I would be porting it anyhow...

might be an interesting build tho. Mill the top flat and lose some weight off the piston without compromising strength.

I don't have a stock 262 so don't know what the differences are between the 262 numbers and the 261. My low hour 261 is a dog compared to my ported high hour 262. I think it still has 160 compression...

You could possibly start a new thread specifically asking for stock numbers for a 262xp, or if you pm'd a couple builders here and asked real nice, perhaps they have some stock numbers written down somewhere.

I would modify it with the dished piston. If it don't work out, purchase the 262 piston. The most it would do is save you a cylinder. You maybe on to something and ain't but one way to find out.

I know most guys just slap a 262 piston in and toss the 261 piston... That would be to easy...lol Sometimes when you do it the hard way there's more to learn...

When I get some time I'll degree the stock 261 and my nodded 262. That would tell me if it will work out.

I was also wondering if the 144 carb will handle a ported jug? I have a hda120 but the plastic inlet elbow is busted. Redrilling it and putting in a metal inlet pipe is a pain..

I can't say both saws are still together... That would tell a guy a lot... I do have an old 262 slug but it is a pop up...

You should be able to port the saw with factory dished piston. Not sure what you mean about going at it the hard way? If you flat top the dished piston and machine the cylinder, for what I know, you would need to take off the base of the cylinder more. This may not be a good thing.

The 144 carb should be fine. However one of the other models available may net more gain.

+1

I've heard that the OEM 262 piston is super expensive. Meteors aren't and run just fine.

Generally, taller and not shorter compression height are what's sought after.

With a base and band cut, plus the shorter piston, you may Freeport the exhaust side skirt at TDC. You're gonna have to drop the jug a bunch. I generally take .026 off the base of an 026 jug and cut the band to a .020 squish. The exhaust roof winds up at 112* or so with no gasket. You'd be taking much more off and will have to raise the ports a mile

I'd like to try a 261 piston in a hot 262 and see how it runs. The decreased compression may be beneficial, but I'm worried about how the dish will effect scavenging.

I like the thought you have. I just think it's not worth the effort for a $40 piston.

The 87 carb does make a difference on a ported 262. On a stock one, you don't need an 87 and the Saw will likely be more rsponsive with the smaller carb.

The 120 and the 144 have the same bore and Venturi. IIRC, the 144 has limiters on the carb. Pull them off and don't replace, you wind up with extremely small adjustment heads that are difficult to tune when the Saw is assembled. Your screwdriver just won't line up easily.

Mastermind modded a 199 carb to work on a 262. The bore is the same as the coveted 87 and the carb is easier to find.

I just wondering on your thoughts on the swap.

Hey Drf thanks for the detailed info just what I was looking for. When I do this build I'll just do the 262 Meteor route I guess. The first thing I did to the 144 was grind the limiters off the h and l screws...
I have the hda199s on my 350/346 and on my 357 builds they have worked well for me. I wonder if it's just a throttle and choke shaft swap!!

I need a plastic inlet elbow for my hda120 was told nla...
