Friend of mine has this 32" dbh oak tree in front yard. Split all the way to the ground on one side, 3 feet from ground on opposite side. Co- dominant stems, the smaller one leaning towards wires, the bigger one will take out the house.

Obviously a bucket truck or climber would be safest. Straight drop with intact canopy is possible, but only about a 5 degree error allowed to avoid wires.

Big concern of mine is the possibility of it scissoring or chairing when cut. The split has become worse in the two weeks with some 50-60 mph winds. I took out the lower branches, leaving long stubs to climb on. Strapped it as high and tight as I could, and put a pull cable around it.

The crack is right in the middle where the face cut needs to be, very ideal that the crack is perpendicular to the ideal falling direction!!!

If you're gonna drop it all at once, I'd put a couple 2" ratchet straps around the trunk about a foot above your felling cut. As it is, half of that tree can go and pivot it's trunk at your upper strap while the other half still stands. I had a maple exactly like this this fall. Had a guy come with a bucket truck top it down to about 20'.

Yea. That's what I meant lol. When I did mine above, I had a 20' tall stump. I notched it into the lean, and came around with a 24" bar (stump was 36"). As I got into it, the bar pinched. Even at 6' below the crotch, half of the tree slid down and pinched the bar. Had to tip that half over to continue cutting the other half. I figured they'd have grown together a bit more. Not at all

We chain them. I've dropped a few like that, but none ever got away from me. A nice tight short choker chain has always been my choice.

Thanks for the replies, this tree has been my biggest felling challenge so far. We got it all down safely, went well. Got everyone in the neighborhood want me to cut their trees down, tons of big dead ash next to houses.

Big dead ash can be scary too. I had one I thought was pretty solid break off at a big limb just from the fall. Almost got my tractor.

Yeah the dead ash around here seem to possibly be going punky after a few years of the bark turning white. Knocked one down last year and the stump cut pretty easily. Still had all the bark even.

It's like playing wack-a-mole. Every time I think I got 'em all I see another. There's one I missed that nature can take her course with,to far gone.
