How tight do you run your chain ?????

You guys keep a sharp chain then ,it is amazing how many i see with the paint all cooked off from running a dull one .

i touch my chain up after every tank i hate cutting with a dull chain.

i can only imagine what the sap does to chain after it cools turning to glue yuck!

It makes a chain ugly ,wd-40 loosens it up ,it does wear off when get in clean wood though ,that doug fir was dripping pitch out the ends ,was dropped the day before i milled it ,if the ends are all pitch covered i do a cookie cut to remove the ends for dry wood .Fir is in the pine family so it is similar in pitch but not as bad .

only wood in my area with high amounts of sap is the sugar maple it will drip sap if you cut a limb off of it.

In softwoods it stays sharp a lot longer ,i can burn 2 gallons of fuel to a grind on the silvey with .404 if i stay out of the dirt .

the only two softwoods in my area is ceder and pine but they are rarely cut i love pine.

Top plate on this .404 is around 20 degrees ,it has a strong corner the way i grind it so stays sharp a little longer,if i go 30 degrees ,corner is too pointy and more fragile so dulls quicker ,i do not do gullet cleaning till the 3rd or 4th grind ,no need to for a work chain .

only reason i keep the gullet cleared is to help with chip removal i run my rakers low also usually on the soft wood setting on my husq roller file i use some.

I don't think I could ever burn 2 gallons of fuel without hitting a piece of embedded metal or rock first.

Milling hardwood I'd get a max of 8 10' slabs out of a semi chisel chain before it was junk. On the 395 that would be 4 tanks.

Mine get loose like that when I mill, and yep, a bit of a pain to tighten. When I mill I have a zip tie that holds the throttle wide open, start the slab, slip the zip tie over the trigger , and go until 5-6" left to go. Average 12-16 minutes. The 088 will burn a whole tank in about 15 minutes. Tach kept around 7400-8000. Constant pressure on the mill keeps the chain nice and smooth, except for big knots will get her zinging!!! With a long bar running that hard, the chain does get warm and sloppy, but the cut surface is what I care about, and the way I run it seems to work well.

See how long it takes me to burn up another 250 dollar piston and cylinder, got 6 hours on the new one.

Are you guys burning the paint off your bars from heat cutting ?

No. Some of my bars have wore out several chains before thwy loose paint. Except the one huaky bar i have loat moat the paint on it. But not do to heat.

usually the paint falls off the husqvarna bars for no reason.

Round file kind of clears the gullet on its own ,the side plate in the square is pretty short ,i do not touch the rakers for 4-5 grinds ,taller rakes can be used with square ,makes the chain not so grabby also plus protects the cutter ,when my chips start looking like 1 inch cheese strings i hit the rakers with a flat file

32:1 it should last longer.

That's what I run, 32:1 h1-r, ounce per quart, 5 ounces per 1.25 gallon e-free, always. Never any ethanol in any of my 2 strokes.
