Having worked on both large equipment to small in all types I can honestly say that a 2 cycle engine can be the most maddening of all when there is something wrong with it and you cannot find what it is .
And yes I have thrown a few in frustration !!

1977 I was 14 and given some old Mac stuff to make out of it what I would. It was just a pile of engines. since then Ive worked on anything I could learn or fix that needed it since then, saws or otherwise. I got the saw bug hard though in 2010 and am hoping I'm on the downhill side of it now.

I joined AS in 2004 looking for info to repair my Super XL. Thought I had a bad coil. $65 later I found out it was just a broken wire... I really didn't do much with saws until about two years ago when I sold a Solo 650 to a guy on Craigslist. We got to talking and he wound up sending me a bunch of saws to fix. I fixed them pretty quickly and he has been feeding me work ever since. I have picked up work from people he has sold saws to as well, including a local tree service. The tree service has recently been sold and the new owner is keeping me busier than the previous owner so far. I truly enjoy figuring out the problems and coming up with solutions... usually...

I've always loved fixing stuff. It was bicycles, then minibikes, then dirt bikes, then junky old cars. I started Central Carolina Tech at the ripe old age of 16. I was the youngest person in the school. Two years of that and I started working for Quality Automotive on flat rate. I freakin hated it. I had quit school in the eighth grade to help my brother frame houses......and so, I went back to framing. Over the years I built a lot of engines, and transmissions. Drag raced heavy for about ten years. I felt like I knew my way around a wrench pretty good......then I met the infernal two stroke chainsaw engine.

Like others have said I've been working on stuff my hole life. Growing up on a farm beside my dad handing him wrenches. He had a mcculloch chainsaw that he wouldn't shut off, I had to be Johnny on the spot with fuel and oil.

for all the older tech. are parts priced about the same for the cost of living back then or has parts prices went through the roof in the last 15 years?

Very little price increases in parts, whole goods, and accessories over the past 20-30 years on 2-strokes.

You calling me old?

Started messing with small engines when i was 10 or so. First job
was a Taylor rental at 15 repairing what ever got busted up on rental.
Then to a small engine lawn mower shop for a year. Then to an other mower shop for 5 years. There i started with mowers at first but shortly after it was chainsaws and Locke power mowers. Did that for over 4
years. Then had the bright idea i wanted to drive big trucks so i went
to work for the largest petroleum carrier in new england. Got my
license and drove a bit but i was in the shop 90% of the time. So i went
from small engines to Cummins 855's, Detroit 6V92's, Mack 672's.
Cat 3406's and every car engine that came along. As well as every standard trans possible. Lots of welding and fabrication as well.
So i guess about 42 years on saws and other things.

I always had junk motorcycles and three wheelers when I was a kid. Dad didn't know *s-word about them and didn't care to so if I wanted to ride them I had to learn to repair them.
I remember dad showing me how to take apart and clean my 2smoke Kawi carb. He'd then ride it wfo down the road w/ a screwdriver to fine tune. Awesome memory! Miss the dirt days fer sure.

Play with a few. Rebuilt a couple. Biggest issue i seen with
those is the throttle shaft seals would go then start sucking air.

Some of the best! My dads a owner operator, has been for 40+ years. Spent a lot of nights working on those 855's

The 855's were the first diesels i got my hands into. There were
tons of them around in the 70's and 80's. I've done more in
chassis's and out of chassis's on them than i dare to count. Back
in the early 90's i built a 800+ HP 855 using Pittsburg power parts
out of Pa. That thing would pull.

Bruce, He's a great guy. I remember going to his shop in the early 80's when my dad was building a big cam 400 from a 290. Cool stuff!
