Yeah, I've got big dog jealousy since I don't have any like that. I've never made any dogs but could I guess since I have a plasma cutter and a mill. I have a Poulan 3400 for sale on here that has a dog on it and I think that's the first saw of that series I've owned that had one. Not sure why they all have been removed over the years.

What does a deeper dog do that a smaller dog wont do? I get it in heavy soft bark or punky wood. But in my mind it only shortens the bars length of cut. I will admit they look cool. I have never built any but if I did it would be a happy medium, so you cant damage the case of the saw and still keep as much bar length cut.
Who here has ever slipped off a exhaust/bar bolt stud and stuck themselves into a nasty gunk covered dog? Bleeds for a while doesn't it. Thank goodness for shop rags and electrical tape. AKA band aid.

Bigger spikes are good for a course bark tree.
Shag bark hickery is hard to get the small spikes in.

What gauge steel are you guys using?

I made some patterns for a set, but haven't had them cut yet...

I just got these crappy Chinese spikes in. Bought them just to see.
Garbage. Lol. They are slightly bent and poor quality.

I measured some on a few different saws, and most were between .090" and .110". I was thinking right in between would be just about right... is that close to 12 gauge?
12ga stainless is what I made mine out of. I sold that saw shortly after I made it so I'm not sure how it held up but I think 12ga is pretty typical at least for the smaller ones.
