Working on an old XL-103 for a buddy at work, and it's got the typical mega-leak at the gas tank vent, is there a special gut that's missing in the vent or is it supposed to be an open pinhole in the middle of the aluminum plug? I thought there be a duck bill or some sort of check valve there......

Also, is the fuel line grommet (where the line goes into the tank) a special one or is there a cross-reference to a standard size grommet? Found some on ebay for 8 bucks plus shipping, which is crazy IMO....

Gonna replace the fuel line with Tygon and add a modern Stihl fuel filter (which will certainly make it run faster and better)

It looks to be a really low-hour saw in great shape, it was in the shed at the house he recently purchased and he wants to get it running again. Has great compression, vacuum and hot spark, so I figured it was worth a go......doesn't look like it was used in the past 25-30 years or so.

Any help would be appreciated fellas! Have a great weekend!

Lol, after closer inspection of the reed block, it may need a little more work than I thought.....

Thanks everyone!

Jeremy, I saw that reed block on ebay. Im gonna check my stash and see if I have an individual reed out of an old XL that I can use for the missing one. I took the muffler off and didn't see any catastrophic damage, light scuffing on the piston but the jug don't look bad.

Compression is good, so I think it'll run....

right through the motor! I'm probably gonna go ahead and take the jug off and check it over, I have the saw torn down this far, might as well.

Like I said, it's been sitting idle for over 25-30 years, in my estimate, and we don't have any idea of the prior history.

The old girl is all back together and runs like a champ! Even made a custom spring steel Overkill bucking spike for it. The NOS air filter came in the mail today, so I'll test her out this evening and get her tuned in the cut.

Little video I took of her first cuts in wood since overhaul. I took a tad too much off of the rakers, but it'll be perfect in another sharpening. That's just an Oregon semi-chisel chain, as well.....

Fun little saw to run, and she's a screamer for how old she is.....

That saw runs pretty dang good. Id probably fatten up the high side a little bit too. I have found the older ones like a bit fatter tune. Seems to help with the vapor locking/ scuffing piston issues that alot of saws that have tanks set up like this one. Your tune isnt far off atall and very nice job bringing another one back from the dead i think they are a respectable saw in their class and probably a chit ton of them sold.

Thanks, Smokey! I really like the saw, and man, it's light for the era that it came from.
