I have stumbled across a makita 6421 in need of repair at a Home Depot. From looking at the repair tag I would guess it has an air leak. Saw is in nice shape. Tag states " recommend sending out to scrap". I tried to buy this saw with no luck. I was told they cannot sell them. So how have you guys that bought HD saws in the past got HD to sells them? Thanks.

Maybe talk to the manager. They obviously sell them. MAybe some @Jon1212 doughnuts to grease the skids. I tried to get one that was listed online at a store as well and they finally told me it was sold, they never updated the website.

Home Depot only sells the rental fleet every so many years. I think every 3 for a particular item. You can talk to the rental people and ask for a list and sometimes they will give it to you to let you know when stuff will come up for sale. Or do what I do and stop in every week. Home Depot won't sell damaged stuff. I have also tried.

I snagged two non-runners late last year when I was in Nashville. It took me two days to get them. First day I went in and asked the tool rental guy, who said he wasn't authorized to sell them and told me to come back the next day and talk directly to the tool rental manager. The manager sold them to me the next day for $75.00/each. If that don't work, and they're just to going to toss it in the dumpster, offer to carry it out there for them.

Sounds like it is up to the manager. I will try to go back and talk to the rental manager. If no luck there, maybe be one of the store managers can help.
I'm not hard up for a project saw but I have never messed with a dolmar/ makita before and they seem very well built.

Someone said they are like a Husqvarna with stihl screws. Only item I don't like about them is the dang chain brake spring. Don't mess with the brake handle unless you have to.

I picked up a really nice rental in 2014. It is a 2012 model and I was told that they keep the saws for approx 70 hours and sell them. Mine was very clean and had a nice piston and cylinder. I really liked my 6421, but of course I needed to add the oem 7910 top end. Then replaced the clutch, drum, etc. for peace of mind. While building it up I noticed more than a few Dolmar 7900/7910 low hour, not former rentals selling for less than I had into mine.

I had fun building mine up and learned a few things, but money wise I should have just bought it how I wanted it to be. I think the build quality is very good. Can you imagine the abuse these things take as rentals???

Agreed. My local dolmar dealer has a nice 7900 with new 24" bar and chain for $600
