Throw the metal catcher in the trash where it belongs. No need to have two catchers, especially after you spent the time installing the roller. The downsides to the metal catch? Many. For starters the chain gets buggered up every time you throw it. I’ve had saws break the DL off the bottom of the chain or leave burrs on them from hitting the metal catch. (FYI I don’t condone removing the metal catch and running no chain catcher, extremely dangerous. You need something there). My point is that a roller works a lot better, especially in a heavy duty logging environment.

Was thinking with the roller the chain wouldn't really get back that far. But you make many good points as usual so I'm tossing it!

I can't quite see the Stihl part # for that felling spike there. Do you have the # for both the inner and outer? They look nice and light and about the size I would need, assuming they'll fit an 044.

Sure thing, the part numbers I've gathered are:

Inner spike: 1122 664 0506
Outer spike: 1122 664 0509 (superceded to 1122 664 0501 which is what came with my cover)
Chain catch: 1122 650 7702

Someone else may be able to comment whether they'll fit the 044.

I had 661 R spike on my 044, they fit, but you need to get both inner + outer.

Mark is sending me the outer spike to match the inner on my 462, but I don't have it yet.

Also not sure if that chain catch is right for the 044. I found there's a few different part numbers (maybe 7701?) that are varying widths.

She's still got her original catcher ;) This is a Euro spec, so it never had the roller, just the little metal tang. I'm not a big fan of the ceramic roller since it is so easy to bend the rod it's on and makes it a pain to put the cover back on.

I usually wear two spikes. But since I have used the 288xp mainly with only it's inner spike, I can go either way. So long as I got something to dig in to a tree when I needs it.

One spike is ok until you have to do a felling cut on the PTO side or bumping knots/crotches on the landing. Then there’s nothing to really grip the tree.

I've worked on landings when I was in Oregon. Don't recall how much I needed that other spike. I mostly used an 046 back then.
The inner spike is right up next to the bar on an 044 and 288.
