I wonder if a draw shave would even cut it. You might be using that farriers rasp a lot.

I'd be happy to do that for ya once I get some seasoned lumber. We have enough snow now that I can't get my wheeler in the woods to haul out 4' chunks of hickory or ash. As far as cost...I have no idea what would be fair. I'm still trying to figure that part out. Sorry it took so long to answer your question, I had a lot of alerts and must have missed your post.

I got this one hung today. It’ll be a nice wedge driver, still have to sand, shape the foot and oil it.

That’s why I went with a handle that length. Didn’t want it to be useless for everything except wedging trees over.

All sanded smooth as a babies bee hind. Just need to keep applying oil over the next few days.

So the good news is I found a mill with flat sawn hickory, the bad news is I gotta wait until payday (the first) to go get some. Apparently the wifey went on a last minute splurge for Christmas for me. Bitter sweet

The grain orientation is correct. Another important part. The way Xp slinger has the grain is correct I be doin handles too. Hickory is gonna be king because of the shock absorption for sure.

I’ve never worked with any green wood nor have I ever done full sized axe handles. I even save my broken shovel handles from work to do hammers. Some folks don’t add the wooden wedge , only the metal ones. I believe the wooden wedge is very important. I’ll see if I can find some random handles I made at work.

Another option you can split your firewood down to make handles instead of buying planks. I can’t get my mitts on any hickory around here but for hatchets and short axes /boys axe I don’t think species makes much difference.
